Plot: March 1971. Brady Conroy (Josh Hartnett) is at the Rolling Stone offices when he is pulled into the supply closet by office manager Kylee Hargrove (Alicia Witt). She begins kissing him. Brady goes along for a moment, kissing Kylee back, before he finally musters up the ability to stop her. He explains to her that he's been meaning to talk to her about their situation. Kylee listens, confused. Brady tells her that due to his relationship with Celeste getting more serious, he feels like he needs to end the no strings attached situation the two of them have together. Kylee assures Brady that she understands and wishes him luck with Celeste. Brady steps out of the supply closet. Kylee is clearly bothered by Brady ending their relationship. She takes a moment in the closet to collect herself before returning to the office floor.
Jimmy Conroy (Lou Taylor Pucci) and Lexi Davenport (Dora Madison Burge) are having sex in a tipi. Afterwards, they lay naked underneath a blanket. Jimmy comments how crazy it is that just one year prior he was behind bars, and now he is there with Lexi - completely free. Jimmy and Lexi get dressed and exit the tipi. They are in the middle of a hippie commune, with tipis, tents, vans and huts all around. They continue walking through the commune and over to an area where many are preparing food for the people living there. Brady and Jimmy's mother, Colleen Conroy (Frances Conroy), is there preparing a large salad. Jimmy comments that it's still crazy that Colleen decided to join them on the commune, but Colleen tells her that she simply likes being around such happy, free people.
Celeste (Aimee Teegarden) is sitting in a journalism class, but finds herself feeling restless at the professor's lecture on proper punctuation for periodical publications. Celeste gets up and leaves the lecture hall. She wanders through the building's halls until she stumbles across a creative writing class. She sneaks into the classroom where she listens to the students read their creative works to the rest of the class. The class' instructor, Professor Leonard (Matthew Perry) then leads the class in a discussion of the piece. At the end of the class, Professor Leonard asks Celeste, who he refers to as the class' lookie-loo, what she thought. Celeste says she found it interesting and enlightening before she leaves the classroom.
At the Rolling Stone offices, Brady is in a meeting with Jann Wenner (Karl Glusman), Ralph J. Gleason (James Urbaniak) and Ben Fong-Torres (Ross Butler). Kylee comes into the conference room to drop off some papers and greets everyone in the room except for Brady. Gleason notices Kylee's coldness toward Brady, and pulls him aside after the meeting. Gleason implores Brady to find a way to smooth things over with Kylee so that it doesn't affect the rest of the office. Brady leaves the conference room and goes up to Kylee. They go into the supply closet, but instead of having sex, the two have a conversation. Brady tells Kylee that he didn't want anything to get confusing between the two of them. Kylee says she didn't either, but that she didn't expect to develop feelings for him. Brady says that while he is committing himself to Celeste romantically, he would still like to remain friends and co-workers with Kylee. They agree and hug. Just then Fong-Torres opens the supply closet and is surprised to see Kylee and Brady in there hugging. He then closes the door and walks away, befuddled.
Jimmy and Colleen are sharing a joint together while Colleen tells her son stories about how she fell in love with Jimmy's late father. Jimmy gives his mother a hug and then tells her that he's going to find Lexi and will give her some space for a little while. Jimmy asks around the commune to see if anyone's seen Lexi and is eventually pointed toward a tipi toward the edge of the land. When he enters the tipi he sees the well-known hippie clown Wavy Gravy (Dan Fogler) watching Mary Jane (Maria Thayer) and Lexi having sex with each other in the middle of the tipi. Wavy Grazy passes Jimmy a bong and invites him to have a seat and watch. Lexi notices Jimmy and stops for a moment, before continuing her passionate experience with Mary Jane. Wavy Gravy introduces himself to Jimmy and asks Jimmy about himself. Wavy Gravy tells Jimmy that he knows another "Conroy" a writer for Rolling Stone Magazine. Jimmy laughs, and explains that Conroy is his brother. Jimmy pulls out a camera and asks if anyone minds if he takes some pictures. Mary Jane and Lexi both agree and continue with their lovemaking while Jimmy circles them, taking pictures of their coitus.
Brady is teaching a class at UC-Berkeley, but finds the lecture hall not as crowded as it had been the previous semester. He continues on with his lecture, but the students don't seem to be very engaged. Brady then changes course and begins telling the students about the time he went to interview Ken Kesey for Rolling Stone magazine and ended up having a threesome with his girlfriend and a hippie while high on acid. One of the students asks what that has to do with journalism. This question surprises Brady and he has to think about the answer himself for a moment. He admits that he was trying to get the class' attention back, but that a journalist will never know what could happen out in the field. It could be dodging bullets in a war zone, getting harassed by subjects, and they could even be lucky enough to find themselves in a situation like he described to them - it's all in the job.

She sits in the back of the lecture hall during the class while Leonard discusses the pros and cons of traditional plot structures in narrative works. Celeste looks down at her journalism text books sitting on the desk in front of her. After the class, Celeste walks over to an adminstration building on the campus of UC Berkeley. She asks how she can change her major and is given a form, she fills it out in order to change her major from journalism to creative writing.
Brady Conroy (Josh Hartnett) enters the Rolling Stone offices and finds the staff all glued to a television by the front desk. Kylee Hargrove (Alicia Witt) tells him that they are going to announce the sentencing in the Charles Manson trial. Ralph J. Gleason (James Urbaniak) adds that the world will soon know if Manson will be sentenced to death or just life in prison. Jann Wenner (Karl Glusman) says that he is normally against the death penalty, but after seeing the photographs of what Manson's followers did to Sharon Tate, he's more indifferent to that consequence in this particular case. A reporter appears on the new to deliver the breaking news: Charles Manson has been sentenced to death. Kylee announces that she's glad. Jann tells everyone that justice has been served so now they can all get back to work. They have a magazine to publish after all.
Jimmy (Lou Taylor Pucci) and Lexi (Dora Madison Burge) are dancing around a drum circle. Colleen (Frances Conroy) sees the two dancing and joins them in the dancing. After the drum circle, Colleen goes off to do some gardening around the commune. Jimmy and Lexi sit down with Mary Jane (Maria Thayer) and smoke some weed. Mary Jane tells them that she is super jazzed that she and some others at the commune are going to head out and follow the Grateful Dead around on their all summer. As Mary Jane passes a joint over to Jimmy, she invites Jimmy and Lexi to tag along on their journey across America. Mary Jane puts her hand between Lexi's legs and tells them that they could have a lot of fun as a trio all over the country. Mary Jane tells Jimmy to come sit between her and Lexi.
At the apartment, Celeste is making dinner when Brady gets home. He asks her if she heard the news on Charles Manson. Celeste shakes her head, and Brady explains that he was sentenced to death. While they sit down to eat, Brady asks her how her classes went today. She tells him that she changed her major. Brady is confused, and Celeste tells him that she has dropped out of the journalism program and switched her major to creative writing. Brady is taken aback by her decision. He asks her why she decided that, and she explains that she just doesn't think she'll be fulfilled with journalism and wants to do something a little more creative with her life. Brady asks what she wants to write, and Celeste says she really wants to focus on her poetry. Brady says he understands her decision, but cautions her that it may be more difficult to make a career out of that than it would be with journalism. Celeste tells Brady that he's starting to sound like her father. Brady laughs and gives Celeste a kiss.
At the commune, Jimmy and Lexi lay naked in front of a fire. A naked Mary Jane is asleep next to them. Lexi tells Jimmy that she wants to go along with Mary Jane to follow the Dead, with or without him. Jimmy says he wants to go too, since if today was any indication, they're looking at loads of fun, but he's worried about his mother. He says that he's the one who brought her here to the commune and he'd feel pretty shitty ditching her here to follow a band around. Lexi says that it seems like Colleen is enjoying herself here at the commune, so she isn't worried about leaving her here. Jimmy agrees that his mother seems happy and comfortable, he just doesn't know how to initiate a conversation like this with her.
Brady is back at the Rolling Stone offices where they are doing a cover photoshoot with Andy Warhol favorite Joe Dallesandro (Gregg Sulkin). Annie Leibovitz (Emily Bett Rickards), Rolling Stone's regular cover photographer, is shooting some pictures in front of a screen in the office. Brady sees Kylee and asks why they're taking pictures in the office, and she tells him that Wenner and Gleason were having trouble deciding on a cover for the next issue, so they needed the photos taken and developed on-site since they're up against the deadline to have the issue finalized. While Leibovitz gives directions Dallesandro, Ben Fong-Torres (Ross Butler) is off to the side taking notes so that he can put the finishing touches on the cover story. Brady drinks some coffee by Kylee's desk and watches the photoshoot. Leibovitz complains to Wenner about having to shoot the pictures in the middle of a functioning office. Wenner tells her that they're out of time and it's the only option. She takes a couple more snaps and walks away. Dallesandro looks around, confused, after Leibovitz storms off and asks if the photoshoot is over. Wenner walks after Leibovitz to try to get her to calm down. Ralph J. Gleason comes out of his office, shakes Dallesandro's hand and thanks him for his time.

Plot: April 1971. Brady Conroy (Josh Hartnett) finishes up a class at UC Berkeley and heads to downtown San Francisco to the Rolling Stone offices. Jann Wenner (Karl Glusman) quickly calls Brady into his office, saying he's just the type of man he wanted to see. Confused, Brady has a seat in Jann's office. Jann asks Brady's opinion of Hunter S. Thompson, and more specifically, the lifestyle Thompson leads. Brady says Thompson is talented, but his lifestyle seems exhausting to him. Jann is happy to hear that and hands Brady a plane ticket to Las Vegas. Brady asks what's going on, and Jann explains that he needs Brady to head to Las Vegas to check in on Thompson.
Brady heads home so that Celeste (Aimee Teegarden) can drop him off at the airport. When he arrives he finds her deep in thought, working on a poem. Celeste is annoyed that Brady is interrupting her work, but agrees to take him to the airport. When they arrive, Brady gives Celeste a kiss and asks her if she wants him to pick her up any miniature, duty-free bottles of booze. Celeste laughs and tells him to go do his job like a responsible adult.
Jimmy Conroy (Lou Taylor Pucci) and Lexi Davenport (Dora Madison Burge) wake up naked in their tipi. Lexi reminds Jimmy that the group is leaving to follow the Grateful Dead on tour later that day. Jimmy says he knows and he will talk to his mother during breakfast. Jimmy puts on some pants and exits the tipi and goes to find his mother. Colleen (Frances Conroy) is making eggs when Jimmy finds her. He tells her that he needs to sit down and talk with her. Colleen announces that the eggs are ready, and several people rush over to get some of her eggs. Colleen smiles that people are so excited for the food she's prepared. Colleen then reveals to Jimmy that she knows that he and Lexi want to go follow the Grateful Dead around. Jimmy is surprised that his mother knew about his dilemma. Colleen encourages Jimmy to go along with Lexi and the others. He's young and deserves to be able to go out and have some fun. He doesn't have to worry about her. Colleen explains that she will be perfectly happy at the commune without him. She has found people who appreciate her here and that gives her comfort. Jimmy gives his mother a hug and tells her that he'll be back after the tour.
Brady arrives outside the hotel Thompson is supposedly staying at, the Flamingo, and sees a trashed 1971 Cadillac El Dorado convertible in the parking lot. Brady figures he must be in the right place and goes to the front desk and asks for the room number of Hunter S. Thompson. The clerk says there is no guest under that name. Brady thumbs through his notes and then asks for the room of a Dr. Raoul Duke. The clerk gives him the room number. Brady goes up the elevator and finds the room, the door of which has been left wide open while the music of Jefferson Airplane is coming through the cracked open door. Brady enters the room to find Hunter S. Thompson (Stephen Dorff) and his associate Oscar Zeta Acosta (Adrian Martinez) in the midst of a deep drugs and alcohol binge. Acosta is naked in the bathtub smoking a joint with a bottle of rum, while Thompson is feverishly typing at a typewriter between bumps of cocaine. Brady makes his presence known, and Thompson quickly grabs his revolver and aims it at the door. Acosta hears the commotion and charges toward Brady with a machete. Brady hides behind a chair. Thompson recognizes Brady and calls off Acosta.
Now that everyone is calm, Brady tells Thompson that there's no way he's been working and is going to have to report back to Wenner what he saw here. Thompson drops a stack of paper in Brady's lap. Thompson explains that it is the article he had been working on about Acosta and his fight against injustice in the barrios of East Los Angeles. Brady says he's surprised not only that Thompson has the article finished but that someone like Acosta, who not too long prior attacked him with a machete, was fighting racial injustice. Thompson explains to Brady that some people may not understand madness, but it doesn't mean there isn't a method to the madness. Brady jokes that Thompson should write something about his time in Las Vegas. He looks around the room at the destruction and remnants of drugs and alcohol and says that clearly an adventure was had. Thompson shows Brady a notebook, telling him that he's already way ahead of him. Scribbled in red marker on the cover of the notebook is FEAR & LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS. Now that business is out of the way, Thompson hands Brady a bottle of tequila and tells him to drink up.
Jimmy and Lexi run up as Mary Jane (Maria Thayer) is loading her things, and copious amounts of marijuana, into a van. Jimmy and Lexi tell her that they are coming along. Mary Jane excitedly tells them to throw their stuff onto the van, there's plenty of room. Colleen waves at Jimmy as the van pulls away to catch up with the Grateful Dead's tour. Mary Jane shouts in excitement and hands a joint to Lexi and Jimmy. She tells them that they're about to have an adventure.

She tries to shake him awake to no avail. She then notices that his hand is in a cast.
The night before in Las Vegas, Brady is out on the town with Hunter S. Thompson (Stephen Dorff) and Oscar Zeta Acosta (Adrian Martinez). The trio stumbles into a Debbie Reynolds concert at the Desert Inn. They accost the usher until he lets them into the show, even though they only have one ticket. The usher says they can stand in the back, but only if they behave themselves. Despite the directions they were given, they sit down at a table up front. Acosta begins setting up lines of cocaine on the table. Brady, Hunter and Acosta begin snorting the lines as the show begins.
Jimmy Conroy (Lou Taylor Pucci), Lexi Davenport (Dora Madison Burge) and Mary Jane (Maria Thayer) are all swaying and dancing to the tunes of the Grateful Dead during a show in Pittsburgh. Lexi notices an attractive hippie woman, Rain (Alanna Masterson), and leaves Jimmy's side to begin dancing with her instead. Jimmy notices that Lexi isn't by his side and sees her dancing with Rain instead. For the first time Jimmy actually looks jealous. After the concert, Jimmy, Mary Jane and Lexi head back to the van. Lexi notices Rain in the parking lot and calls her over to come party with the others. Rain tells the group that she has been following the Dead exclusively for over two years now. Where ever they go, she goes - even out of the country. Jimmy asks how she manages to do that, and Rain says that she manages to get by. Jimmy clarifies that he's wondering how she can afford to travel all over the world without seemingly having a real job of any kind. Lexi tells Jimmy to knock it off, but he says he's honestly just curious how she manages something that sounds so costly. Rain says that money isn't important to her. Jimmy starts to get annoyed and asks if she doesn't care about money, how does she pay for cross Atlantic flights. Rain finally admits that he parents pay her expenses.
Debbie Reynolds (Angela Kinsey) becomes distracted during her show by the behavior of Thompson, Acosta and Brady. She has the spotlights aimed at them and asks why they even bothered to come to her show if all they are going to do is cause a disruption. Acosta tells Reynolds he's a huge fan of The Singing Nun. Brady starts laughing uncontrollably at the thought. Reynolds has security kick them out of the concert hall so that she can get on with her usual show. Brady realizes that he has a flight back to San Francisco to catch in the morning and tries to hail a cab to take him back to the hotel. Thompson tells Brady that they don't need a cab, he can drive him if they can find where they parked the car. When a cab doesn't appear to be slowing down, Brady steps out in front of it in an attempt to get it to stop, but the car instead hits Brady, knocking him to the ground. Thompson and Acosta initially joke about Brady getting hit by a car, but then they notice that his hand is swelling up really quickly. Thompson says they should probably find Brady a doctor or they might have to amputate. Acosta pulls his machete out from the back of his belt.
In the morning, Jimmy wakes up to the sound of the van door closing. He looks out the window and watches as Lexi gets into a station wagon with Rain. Lexi looks back to the van and sees that Jimmy is watching her. She gives him a wave. Jimmy quickly pulls out his camera and takes a picture of Lexi leaving his life. Jimmy then lays back down with a dejected look on his face. The station wagon then pulls out of the parking lot. Meanwhile, Brady is arrives at the airport just in time for his flight home. Brady's hand is now in a cast.
Brady finally wakes up to find Celeste making some food in the kitchen. Brady winces in pain from every sound coming from the kitchen. Celeste notices that Brady is awake and asks him what the hell happened in Las Vegas. Brady says that Hunter S. Thompson happened. She hands him a cup of coffee. Brady thanks her and chugs the coffee. Brady asks her to remind him to never go out on the town with Thompson ever again. Celeste laughs and jokes that she can only imagine the hijinks they were up to. Brady tells her that it would probably also be best if he never encountered Debbie Reynolds again. Celeste gives Brady a puzzled look. Brady lays back down on the couch and closes his eyes.

James Urbaniak .... Ralph J. Gleason
Alicia Witt .... Kylee Hargrove

Plot: May 1971. Brady Conroy (Josh Hartnett) is dropping an article off at the Rolling Stone offices and chatting with Kylee Hargrove (Alicia Witt) at the front desk. Ralph J. Gleason (James Urbaniak) sees them talking and joins them up front. Gleason comments that it is nice to see the two of them back to functioning as normal co-workers again after the some of the previous confusion between the two of them. Brady says all is good. Gleason then invites both of them to a Memorial Day party at his house that weekend. Brady and Kylee both thank him for the invite, and Gleason encourages both to bring significant others along.
When Brady arrives back at home he finds his brother Jimmy (Lou Taylor Pucci) sitting outside on the street. Brady says that he thought Jimmy and Lexi were following the Grateful Dead around the east coast. Jimmy says that presumably Lexi still is, but that she left him so he didn't feel like sticking around any longer. Brady invites Jimmy up for a beer. Jimmy asks if he can crash on Brady's couch again, and Brady reluctantly agrees. When they get upstairs Brady tells Celeste (Aimee Teegarden) about the Memorial Day party at Gleason's house that weekend. When she looks at how dejected Jimmy looks, Celeste suggests that they bring Jimmy along.
That weekend, Brady, Celeste and Jimmy all arrive at the party. They are greeted at the door by Gleason's wife, Felicia (Parker Posey). She instructs Brady and Jimmy to both put their keys in a large glass jar by the front door. Brady assumes this is just so that people don't drive home drunk, but once they're inside Jimmy explains to Brady and Celeste that they have just arrived at a key party. Celeste is unfamiliar with the concept, so Jimmy explains that at the end of the party, once everyone is good and tipsy, the women of the party draw a pair of keys from the jar. The woman then has sex with the owner of the keys that night. Brady and Celeste both look surprised by this news, but neither wants to seem too square or conservative to the other so they don't object to the notion. Jimmy says it should be one hell of a party and goes off to find the bar.
Kylee walks up to Brady and Celeste and introduces them to a man she just met, Jackson (Justin Chambers). She tells them that he is a professional motorcycle racer. Kylee is clearly already getting intoxicated, much to Jackson's delight. Brady asks Kylee if she knew this was a key party, and Kylee says of course, Gleason has thrown a key party every Memorial Day weekend for years. Brady and Celeste head further into the party where they run into Jann Wenner (Karl Glusman) and his wife Jane (Leighton Meester). They are sharing a joint with Gleason and Felicia around a fire pit.
As the night comes closer to an end, Gleason announces that everyone needs to head to the living room for the rest of the festivities. Brady and Celeste nervously join the others inside. Gleason announces that each of the ladies in the room will now come and randomly select the car keys of the person they will be spending the night with. Each woman guest takes turns going up to the jar. Kylee happens to select Jackson's keys and happily leaves the party with him. By the end, only Jimmy, Celeste, Brady and Felicia remain. Felicia goes up to draw next, pulling out Brady's keys. As Brady is about to stand up, Jimmy gives him a pat on the back and announces that those are his keys. Felicia leads Jimmy to one of the bedrooms in the house. A look of relief goes over Brady and Celeste's faces as they are the last two left in the living room. Celeste grabs Jimmy's keys out of the jar and asks Brady what they do now. Brady and Celeste go out to the car where they have sex.
The next morning, Brady and Celeste are eating breakfast while Jimmy snores from the couch. Brady comments that before Celeste he would probably have had no issue with a swinging party like Gleason's, but now that she's in his life for good such an event holds no interest for him. As they continue eating over the sounds of Jimmy's snores, Brady asks Celeste to remind him to decline Gleason's next party invitation.

Conroy said he hasn't really thought about it recently since he's enjoying how things are now. Smalling tells Conroy that he doesn't like his educators only having their toes dipped in academia. Celeste (Aimee Teegarden) is in the last session of her creative writing class under Professor Leonard (Matthew Perry). He tells the class that they may be adjourning for the summer, but he has set up a public reading for the class at a cafe in the city. He tells them that he expects them all to be there and he expects them all to bring their best work to share with everyone. When Celeste gets home, she starts going through her notebooks finding something suitable to present at the class reading.
Brady and his brother Jimmy (Lou Taylor Pucci) stay up late drinking. Brady tells Jimmy about his meeting with Dean Smalling, and Jimmy asks Brady what he plans on doing. Brady admits that he doesn't have a clue, so it's good that he has a few months left to figure it all out. Brady changes the subject and asks Jimmy what his plans are for work. Jimmy says that he took a lot of great pictures when at the commune and following the Dead around. He has been developing them and just has to figure out what to do with them.
The next morning, Brady and Jimmy are passed out in the living room when Celeste wakes them up. She tells them that Jim Morrison is dead. Brady is especially stunned since The Doors are his favorite band. She tells them that the announcement on the radio said that he died nearly a week ago in France. Brady asks if it was a drug overdose like Hendrix and Joplin. Celeste says that the report said it was natural causes, but that seems fishy at 27 years old. The phone begins ringing. Gleason (James Urbaniak) tells Brady that there is a lot to be done in a very short amount of time in order to have a new cover story about Morrison for the new issue. He tells Brady that Wenner is already at work on the obituary, but they need quotes, background information, everything else to fill things out. Gleason tells Brady to check in with Fong-Torres for specific work that needs to be done. Brady goes to the desk of Ben Fong-Torres (Ross Butler), who gives a stack of numbers. Ben says to call the numbers and ask each person for a statement, a story, a comment, anything they are willing to divulge to Rolling Stone magazine about Morrison. Brady is exhausted by all the calls, but once he gets through the list he hands his stack of notes to Wenner.
Brady gets home late that night to find Jimmy hanging up several recently developed photographs. Brady notices that they are all of Lexi and Mary Jane in sexual acts. Brady jokes that his brother sure has an eye for smut. Jimmy says that it isn't all drum circles on the commune, sometimes it's watching two women having sex next to a hippie clown in a tipi. Brady comments that it doesn't seem like the kind of place their mother would feel at home in. Jimmy suggests they drive out to the commune soon to check on her.

Plot: July 1971. Brady Conroy (Josh Hartnett) is in the conference room at the Rolling Stone magazine offices meeting with Jann Wenner (Karl Glusman) and Ralph J. Gleason (James Urbaniak). The compliment him on his latest article. Wenner then asks Brady if he's ever considered writing something more long-form more the magazine. Conroy says that he hasn't really thought about it to be honest. Wenner and Gleason tell him to go ahead and think about it and let them know if he has any ideas that he would want to tackle in that format.
When Brady gets home he finds Celeste (Aimee Teegarden) working away at some of her writing while Jimmy (Lou Taylor Pucci) is taking hits on his bong. Brady chastises Jimmy for getting high before they have to leave to go visit their mother at the commune. Celeste reminds Brady that her creative writing class reading is the next night downtown. She tells him that she doesn't want him showing up in the midst of a drug-fueled bender after partying all night at a hippie commune. Brady assures Celeste that he knows how important the reading is to her and tells her that he wouldn't miss it for the world. Brady gives Celeste a kiss, then tells Jimmy to get in the car.
On the drive to the commune, Brady talks about needing to make a decision between teaching or writing full-time. Having his toes dipped in both waters part-time just isn't proving sustainable. He says that his boss at the university has given him a deadline to decide to teach full-time or not, while at the same time the editors at Rolling Stone want him to write bigger, more in-depth articles. Jimmy rolls his eyes at his brother's dilemma, and points out that it's better to have to choose between two careers than not have one at all. Brady seriously asks Jimmy what he plans on doing, and Jimmy says that he wants to find a way to display his photographs. He believes that his work is strong enough that if the right eyes end up on his photographs something will happen.
Brady and Jimmy arrive at the commune as the sun begins setting. Jimmy leads the way as the two brothers make their way through the field of gardens, tipis and vans looking for their mother. They finally stumble upon Wavy Gravy (Dan Fogler), who they both recognize. Wavy Gravy, on the other hand, does not seem to recognize either of the Conroy brothers and goes about introducing himself to them. Brady and Jimmy inform him that he's met both of them before. Wavy Gravy laughs, but still doesn't believe them. Jimmy asks him if he knows where their mother Colleen is, and Wavy Gravy leads them to their mother Colleen (Frances Conroy). Wavy Gravy tells her that a couple strangers have come looking for her. She smiles at her sons and thanks Wavy Gravy for his help. Brady and Jimmy ask their mother how she is doing, and she says that she is genuinely happy. She tells her sons that she actually has some big news for them. She says that she has fallen in love with a man here at the commune. Brady and Jimmy are stunned. Suddenly, Artie (Martin Mull) emerges from a nearby tipi completely naked. He walks up to Colleen and gives her a kiss on the cheek before holding out his hand for Brady and Jimmy to shake. Brady shakes his hand, but Jimmy is distracted by the naked elderly man in front of him. Colleen tells Artie to put some shorts on or something since her sons don't need to see him naked.
That night, Brady, Jimmy, Colleen and Artie eat dinner around a fire. Artie then pulls out an accordion and begins playing it while Colleen dances. Brady and Jimmy look at each other in confusion. In the morning, Colleen wakes Brady and Jimmy up, telling them that she has made breakfast. They are a little disappointed that there is no meat with the meal, but Colleen tells her sons that Artie is a vegetarian, so it wouldn't be fair to him if they had meat with breakfast. Brady cuts to the point of the visit and asks Colleen if she wants to come back to San Francisco with he and Jimmy. Colleen declines the offer and assures both of her sons that she is happy on the commune with Artie, who is still snoring away from the inside of their tipi. Brady tells her that she is always welcome in the city with him if she so chooses. Colleen thanks him for the offer and gives Brady a hug. She then tells Jimmy to join in for a family hug. Artie, once again naked, comes out of the tipi and also joins the family hug.
Brady and Jimmy drive back to the city and head straight to the cafe where Celeste's class reading is taking place. Brady tells Jimmy that he can take the car back to the apartment, but Jimmy insists on coming in, saying that he never turns down the chance to hit on college girls. Brady tells Jimmy that would have been easier if he had bothered to go to college. Jimmy reminds Brady that he got drafted into the military, so he was a little busy during his college-age years. When they enter the cafe, they find Celeste's table and sit down. Professor Leonard (Matthew Perry) gets up in front of everyone and introduces the first reader of the evening, Celeste. She gets up on stage in front of everyone. She is clearly nervous at first, but as she reads a poem she wrote she gains more confidence. At the end of her poem, everyone cheers for her. Jimmy comments to Brady that he is surprised that she's actually a really good writer, although the poem was clearly about her relationship with Brady. Brady is taken aback by this since he didn't come to that conclusion. At the end of the event, Celeste is approached by Peter Cousins (David Costabile), who says that he runs a small publishing house in the neighborhood and would love to publish Celeste's poem and any other she has like it. Celeste excitedly tells Brady about the publishing offer. Brady congratulates her. Celeste then goes over to tell Professor Leonard the news.

Plot: August 1971. Brady Conroy (Josh Hartnett) is sitting in the conference room of the Rolling Stone magazine offices opposite Jann Wenner (Karl Glusman) and Ben Fong-Torres (Ross Butler). Jann explains that Brady's next assignment is to hop on a plane with Ben to New York City and meet with the people at Marvel Comics for a big cover story. Ben is excited since he is a big comic fan, but Brady isn't quite as familiar with the subject matter and asks if it has to do with Superman or Batman. Ben, annoyed, replies that those are DC Comics characters. He then proceeds to list superheroes like The Hulk, Spider-Man and the Fantastic Four. Brady nods his head, but it's not clear if he actually recognizes any of those names. Brady asks Jann if he's sure he should work on the piece since he's not very familiar with the subject matter. Jann says that's not important as the main article has already been written. He says that he needs Ben and Brady to interview some of the writers, get some quotes and descriptions of the Marvel offices and talk to the company's editor, a man named Stan Lee. One his way out of the offices, Kylee Hargrove (Alicia Witt) asks Brady if he's excited about the trip to New York. Brady admits that he doesn't know what to make of the trip.
Back at his apartment, Brady asks his younger brother Jimmy (Lou Taylor Pucci) about Marvel Comics. Jimmy's eyes light up and he begins to tell Brady all about the characters: how Peter Parker was bitten by a radioactive spider, how Bruce Banner was caught in the blast of a gamma bomb, how Doctor Strange harnessed the mystical arts. Brady is taken aback by all the information and asks Jimmy how popular these stories are. Jimmy is baffled by Brady's lack of knowledge on the subject, and tells Brady that the comics are super popular and the characters are surpassing old school characters like Superman with people today. Jimmy pulls out a Daredevil comic and tosses it to Brady and tells him to read it. Brady looks at the cover and asks what the hero's superpower is. Jimmy says that Daredevil is blind. Brady is confused as that is generally considered a handicap. Jimmy elaborates that the loss of his sight due to radioactive chemicals enhanced all of his other senses to superhuman levels.
Before Brady leaves for the airport, he checks in on Celeste (Aimee Teegarden), who has been in the bedroom all day. He asks her what she's been up to, and she tells him that she is touching up some material for the publishing guy she met at her class reading since she's meeting with him later. Brady wishes her good luck with that and gives her a kiss. She says thanks and tells him good luck with the superhero stuff. Brady then heads back out to the living room where Jimmy is just about to light up his bong. Brady tells Jimmy to hold off since he needs a ride to the airport.
Celeste meets with the man she met at her class reading, Peter Cousins (David Costabile). She hands him a stack of poems. He tells her that he loves them, but unfortunately his employers are not looking to publish any unknown poets at this time. Celeste's face drops, but Cousins says he does have some good news for her though. He has talked with a friend who works with City Light Publishers and they would like to meet with her and read her stuff. She asks him if he is talking about the City Lights that published Allen Ginsberg's Howl. Cousins says it is one and the same. He tells her that he has arranged to meet with the company's founder later that day and tells her to make sure her schedule is clear.
Brady and Ben arrive at the Marvel Comics headquarters in a nondescript Manhattan office building. Comic book covers line the walls of the reception area. Ben is distracted by the artwork, so Brady tells the receptionist that they are from Rolling Stone magazine and are there to see Stan Lee. The receptionist makes a phone call and tells them he'll be with them shortly. Brady takes a seat while Ben walks around staring at the art on the walls. Finally, Stan Lee (Marc Maron) comes out of his office and excitedly greets Brady and Ben. Stan sees that Ben has his eyes glued to a Fantastic Four cover and jokes that clearly Ben is more interested in meeting the Invisible Woman. Ben tells Stan it's an honor to meet him. Stan starts giving the men a tour of the offices. Brady admits to Stan that he's not really familiar with any of the Marvel comic books. Stan says that's alright and admits that some days he thinks he'd be happy if he never had to see another comic book for the rest of his life. Ben is shocked that someone like Stan Lee would admit to something like that. Brady asks Stan what drew him to writing superhero comic books since that surely wasn't his career plan as a child. Stan says that it actually was what he was always fascinated by. He liked the idea of using fantastical characters to explore real-life issues. At the end of the tour, Stan tells Ben and Brady that he sincerely hopes they got enough material for the big piece the magazine is doing.
Cousins takes Celeste to City Lights Bookstore. They head into the poetry room where they are met by the company's founder Lawrence Ferlinghetti (Mark Hamill). He asks Celeste if she wants her work to be on the shelves in that room. Celeste nods her head and says very much so. Ferlinghetti tells her that her poems better be damn good then since he has managed to build quite the reputation in the city and wouldn't want to publish any works that would tarnish that reputation with is regular readers. Celeste hands him her poems and he tells her that he'll give them a look over and have Cousins contact her if City Lights decides to publish her poems.

Plot: August 1971. Celeste (Aimee Teegarden) is at City Lights meeting with Peter Cousins (David Costabile) and the founder of City Lights, Lawrence Ferlinghetti (Mark Hamill). They tell her that they have talked to one of their editors about working with Celeste to tidy up some of her poems for publication. Celeste asks them what's wrong with her poems currently. Ferlinghetti tries to explain that there's nothing technically wrong with them, but that an editor will be helpful when it comes to the overall structure of the publication. Nancy Peters (Anna Chlumsky) enters the room, and Cousins and Ferlinghetti tell Celeste that she'll be working with Nancy. As Cousins and Ferlinghetti prepare to leave the room, Ferlinghetti assures Celeste that she's in good hands with Nancy. Once Cousins and Ferlinghetti are gone, Nancy tells Celeste that there is a lot of work to do if City Lights are going to publish Celeste's hodgepodge, amateurish poetry.
Brady Conroy (Josh Hartnett) is sitting with his brother Jimmy (Lou Taylor Pucci) brainstorming possible ideas for more long-form stories to write. Brady doesn't like any of the ideas they've come up with so far and wants to take a break. Jimmy gets back to work developing more of his pictures from the commune. Jimmy jokes that Brady should write about the commune since that was one wild place to be. Brady makes the comment that that isn't such a bad idea. Jimmy takes down some photographs and puts them in his portfolio. He tells Brady that he managed to get an appointment with a gallery owner about displaying some of his pictures.
Celeste finds herself frustrated working with Nancy, who has taken a red pen to several of her poems, moving stuff around and changing words. Celeste finally has had enough and says that she doesn't like what Nancy is doing. Her poems are her words, not Nancy's. Nancy is pleased with Celeste's protests, saying that she's glad that Celeste is passionate about her work. Passion is the most important thing, but that her passion is not showing on the page. Celeste asks how she can fix that, and Nancy asks Celeste what her poems are actually about. Celeste struggles for an answer, and Nancy stops her, saying that's the problem. Nancy pulls out one poem, calling it her favorite, and asks Celeste about it. Celeste says she wrote it about her boyfriend Brady. Nancy asks which poems are also about him, and Celeste points out a few. Nancy suggests framing her collection around those poems about Brady, since they are the ones that feel the most passionate. Celeste nods her head.
Brady arrives at the Rolling Stone offices and talks with Kylee Hargrove (Alicia Witt) at the front desk. He asks her if Jann is available to talk, and she offers to check for him. She goes off to Jann's office, and Jann Wenner (Karl Glusman) comes out a moment later and invites Brady into his office and asks what he wants to talk about. Brady tells Jann that he may have come up with an idea for something a bit more longform. He is thinking about writing something about how his mother ended up living on a hippy commune. Jann says he likes the idea, but says that it may be a bit more personal and less cultural than pieces for Rolling Stone generally are. However, Jann offers to take a look at a first chapter of the piece when it's ready and if he doesn't want it for Rolling Stone, he will help Brady with some publishing contacts who be more interested. Brady thanks Jann for his time and leaves the office.
Jimmy is at an a photography gallery while the owner, Jennifer Albright (Melora Hardin) looks through his portfolio. Jimmy is nervous as Jennifer's face is expressionless. When she gets to the end, she closes the portfolio and looks at Jimmy for a moment. Finally she tells Jimmy that she likes his work. She finds the pictures that he took at the commune to be very sexual, probably to sexual for her to display all of them, but she definitely notices his talents at photographing the female form. Jimmy asks Jennifer if she likes his work enough to display it in her gallery. She tells him yes, that she is very interested in displaying it. In fact, she would like to have an entire show of just his work next work. She explains that they would have to an after hours event due to the adult content of his photographs.
Celeste, Brady and Jimmy all arrive back at the apartment at the same time. They are all tired from busy, productive days. Brady puts on "Our House" by Crosby, Still, Nash & Young on the record player. Jimmy sits by the window and lights up a joint. Brady sits down on the couch. Celeste sets down her things and sits down next to each other. As Graham Nash sings on the single, Brady and Celeste close their eyes and fall asleep in each other's arms on the couch.

Plot: September 1971. The new semester is just a couple weeks in at UC Berkeley for Brady Conroy (Josh Hartnett). He finally musters up the courage and knocks on the door of his boss, the head of the journalism department, Dean Alan Smalling (John C. McGinley). Smalling greets Brady warmly and invites him to have a seat. Brady sits down and tells him that he's decided to step down from his teaching role at the end of the semester to focus on his writing career. Smalling is livid and begins yelling at Brady. He tells Brady that he rejects his resignation, and yells that Brady is fired - effective immediately. Brady gets up to leave. Smalling tells him that Brady will never teach at a California university as long as he breathes. If he even so much as hears that Brady is applying at other schools, Smalling will inform them that he fired Brady for doing drugs on the job and sleeping with students. Brady is about to punch Smalling, but manages to restrain himself and leaves Smalling's office, slamming the door behind him.
Celeste (Aimee Teegarden) is at City Lights where Lawrence Ferlinghetti (Mark Hamill) and Nancy Peters (Anna Chlumsky) proudly show her the test printing of her book of poems. Celeste almost starts crying while holding a copy. They tell her that they are ready to start selling them by the end of the week, and would like her to do a reading to help drum up interest. They tell her they will spread the word and make fliers for a Saturday afternoon reading. Celeste profusely thanks them.
Jimmy (Lou Taylor Pucci) as at the gallery with the owner Jennifer Albright (Melora Hardin) setting up for his after hours showing. They post several pictures of the sexual acts between Lexi and Mary Jane, as well as other pictures from the commune. Jennifer shares with Jimmy that she has invited some publishing luminaries, and if they like his work there's always the chance that one of them could commission him to photograph for them. Jimmy says that would be cool and all, but he's not going to get his hopes up. He did some photographs for Rolling Stone magazine the year before, but it didn't really work out for him.
Brady walks into the Rolling Stone offices. He tells Kylee Hargrove (Alicia Witt) at the front desk that he resigned or was fired from the university, depending on who you ask. She asks what he plans on doing now, and he says that he's working on something a little more long form, hopefully for the magazine. She says that is exciting news. Brady says that he is a little more trepidation about the situation since he isn't used to being without a regular steady gig. Kylee says that she's sure he could always write smaller pieces for the magazine if need be.
Jimmy is nervously standing around the gallery as people start to show up for the after hours showing of his work. Jennifer is hard at work talking up the pieces and introducing the guests to Jimmy. Jimmy then notices a well-dressed man staring at the pictures of Lexi and Mary Jane. Jimmy asks if the guy is a creep, but Jennifer tells him to lower his volume with talk like that and tells him that is Bob Guccione (Peter Facinelli), founder of Hustler Magazine. Jimmy suddenly perks up and walks over to the man and introduces himself as a fan of the magazine. Guccione tells Jimmy that he is a fan of Jimmy's eye for the erotic, motioning toward the photographs of Lexi and Mary Jane on the wall.
The next day, Brady and Jimmy arrive at City Lights for the reading of Celeste's book of poetry. Ferlinghetti introduces Celeste to the collection of regular poetry enthusiasts and literary critics that have congregated at the book store to hear Celeste's words. Brady goes up to her before she goes up in front of everyone. He gives her a kiss and tells her he's proud of him. Celeste gets up in front of the crowd and opens up her book of poetry and begins reading from it.
