Plot: September 1970. Brady Conroy (Josh Hartnett) walks out of a lecture hall at UC Berkeley after teaching a journalism class. Dean Allan Smalling (John C. McGinley) greets him after the class, congratulating him on his first day back it work in academia. Brady goes home to find Celeste (Aimee Teegarden) packing up her things into the car of her friend Kira (Katherine McNamara). He asks her what she's doing, and Celeste tells Brady that she is moving out and breaking up with him. He asks her why, and she tells him that he hasn't been making any time for her between hanging around with his jail bird brother, writing for Rolling Stone and going back to teaching. He doesn't say anything in response. Celeste, frustrated, gets into Kira's car and they drive away.
Brady's brother, Jimmy Conroy (Lou Taylor Pucci), comes outside from the apartment and asks Brady if he wants to go out and get a drink. Brady says he has to head into the Rolling Stone office to turn in an article, but after that he would be willing to go get that drink. Jimmy offers to tag along to the office with Brady so that they can go get a drink right afterward. Brady shrugs and the two brothers drive off to the office. As they get close, they notice a large group of people starting to congregate down the street from the Rolling Stone office. A police squad sets up a blockade and tell Brady and Jimmy that they have decided to close the street due to a possible war protest starting up. Brady pulls over the car and they walk the rest of the way to the office.
Brady and Jimmy head into the office where they are greeted by office manager Kylee Hargrove (Alicia Witt). Jimmy immediately starts trying to charm Kylee, but she isn't interested. Jimmy's attention is then caught by Hunter S. Thompson (Stephen Dorff), who is holding court in the conference room, going on a diatribe about the failure of the American Dream. Jann Wenner (Karl Glusman) and Ralph J. Gleason (James Urbaniak) nervously watch the increasingly large and restless crowd in the streets outside. Brady has Ben Fong-Torres (Ross Butler) look over his latest article. Ben tells him the article is good to go and asks Brady how it has been going back to teaching. Brady says it's alright, although it doesn't feel quite the same as it did previously.
A police officer enters the office and tells the magazine staff to lock the doors and stay inside as the protest outside is starting to turn violent. As if that was his queue, Hunter S. Thompson announces that he must join the fray outside and see what all the fuss is about. Thompson downs the last of his beer and pushes past the cop and makes his way out into the commotion outside.
Jimmy asks Brady to introduce him to Jann Wenner, and Brady asks why. Jimmy reveals that after Brady left for college, Jimmy got into photography and was wondering if Brady can hook him up with some work for the magazine. Brady is uncomfortable with the proposition, but agrees to at least introduce Jimmy to Jann.
Celeste is among the crowd protesting, along with her friend Kira and Kira's Vietnam War vet brother Kyle (Kieran Culkin). Celeste and Kira both wield signs protesting the United States' involvement in the war, while Kyle wears his uniform from the war. A police officer tries to block their movement, so Kyle takes the cop's mace and sprays him with it. Some more officers rush over and begin beating Kyle with their nightsticks. They arrest Kyle as well as Kira and Celeste.
Brady introduces Jimmy to Wenner and Gleason. He tells them Jimmy's his little brother. Jimmy quickly tells them he's a photographer. Wenner asks Jimmy if they can talk to Brady alone about his latest article. Jimmy says sure and leaves the office. Brady insists that he had no idea that Jimmy was going to do that. Wenner says it's okay and tells Brady that he can have Jimmy tag along on his next interview and have him take some pictures. If they're good, they might use them. Brady asks who he is set to interview, and Gleason chimes in that they have scheduled an interview with The Who's Pete Townshend.
The Rolling Stone staff are still all holed up in the office as the protest outside still roars. Jimmy tells Brady that he's going to head outside to see if anyone has some weed. After Jimmy leaves, Brady sits down. Kylee comes over and sits down next to him. She asks how Brady's girlfriend is doing. Brady tells her that she broke up with him. Kylee says that's too bad and asks Brady if he can help her organize the supply closet while they have all the extra time at the office. She leads him into the closet where she immediately begins kissing him. Brady kisses her back, and the two begin having sex in the supply closet.

Plot: September 1970. Celeste (Aimee Teegarden) sits in a holding cell at the police station with Kira (Katherine McNamara), Kyle (Kieran Culkin) and some of the other protestors. A officer opens the cell door and tells Celeste that someone has posted her bail. She is escorted through a corridor and into the lobby where she is given her release papers. When she leaves the station, Celeste finds Brady Conroy (Josh Hartnett) sitting on the steps outside. She thanks Brady for posting bail for her. She didn't want her parents to find out she was arrested. Brady tells her not to worry about it. Celeste insists that she will pay Brady back the money he paid to get her out. Brady asks her if she needs a ride. They ride in his car, listening to the radio, not talking to each other.
Brady enters the Rolling Stone offices and heads over to the desk of Kylee Hargrove (Alicia Witt) to pick up plane tickets and press credentials for his interview with Pete Townshend. Kylee mentions that things feel a bit awkward since the night they spent in the supply closet. Brady quietly admits that he's never slept with anyone he's worked with before and doesn't quite know how to go about it. Kylee holds her hand out and tells her that they're friends and that's all that matters. Brady accepts her handshake.
Brady arrives back at his apartment to find his brother Jimmy (Lou Taylor Pucci) smoking a joint on the balcony. Brady tells him that he needs to pack a bag and get ready to go to the airport if he wants to be the photographer for the Townshend interview. Jimmy quickly finishes his joint and throws a shirt and some underwear in a duffle bag and announces he's all packed. Brady rolls his eyes and heads out to his car. As they drive to the airport, Jimmy asks where exactly the concert even is. Brady tells them the Netherlands. Jimmy is suddenly interested and asks if they are going to Amsterdam. Brady looks at the tickets and nods his head. Jimmy says he's heard they have good weed over there. Brady reminds Jimmy that they are going there to work, not party, as they pull into the airport parking lot.
After they land in Amsterdam, they take a cab to the hotel. Jimmy is not impressed by the hotel and its lack of amenities, but Brady tells him not to worry about since it's almost time for them to head over to the concert. They walk to the concert hall and notice a huge line in front of the building. Brady asks Jimmy if he wants to see something cool. Jimmy nods his head. Jimmy then follows Brady as he walks past the entire line and shows his press credentials to the security guard at the doors. Brady and Jimmy are then ushered into the building. Brady tells Jimmy that the interview is set for after the show, so Jimmy should go find a place to take some good pictures of the concert.
The Who end their show with a rendition of "My Generation". After the show, Brady and Jimmy meet backstage and are directed to a dressing room. Brady knocks at the door and Pete Townshend (Miles Kane) answers and invites the lads from Rolling Stone into the dressing room. Excited to talk music with Townshend, Brady sits down and begins asking questions about The Who's current tour, which is winding down. Townshend tells Brady to slow down. He isn't interested in answering the same old questions about the tour, the music, the rock 'n roll life style. Instead, Townshend tells Brady that he has an exclusive to the magazine. He's going to talk about something he's never gone into detail with the press about. Clearly intrigued, Brady asks Townshend what exactly it is he wants to talk about. Townshend simply says, Meher Baba. It takes a second for Brady to connect the dots, and then asks if Townshend is talking about the silent Indian guru. Townshend nods his head.
As they discuss the teachings Townshend learned from the Meher Baba, Brady interrupts him to ask for a specific example of how Baba's teachings have influenced Townshend's songwriting. Townshend compliments the quality of the question and asks Brady if he's heard their song "The Seeker". Brady says of course he has. Townshend explains that the song is about what Baba refers to as the "Divine Desperation". That's just one example, as his entire process has changed since meeting Baba in 1968 - not just his process of songwriting, but his the entire way he goes about his life. Townshend pulls out a copy of Baba's book, The God-Man. He tells Brady that the book may illuminate him, or at least provide some additional context for his article. Either way, he feels it is important to pass along the teachings of someone as divine and in-tuned as Baba was.
Brady and Jimmy leave the concert hall unsure what to make of their time with Townshend. Brady is worried that the article isn't going to be what the editors had in mind, but Jimmy tells him to relax since he can only write with the material Townshend gave him. Jimmy has constructed a dark room in Brady's bathroom where he develops the pictures he took of Townshend and the rest of the concert.
Back in San Francisco, Brady is having trouble writing the article as he is having trouble connecting to the Meher Baba material. Jimmy picks up The God-Man and is glued to it. Jimmy helps Brady with the spiritual aspects of Baba and Townshend. Brady nervously turns the article into Jann Wenner (Karl Glusman) and Ralph Gleason (James Urbaniak). They are surprised by the content of the article. Brady tells them that Townshend was insistent on the article being about his connection to Baba. Wenner tells Brady not to worry since he heard a rumor that Townshend would probably want to talk about something spiritual. Gleason asks Brady how another cover story sounds. Brady is surprised that they would want the Townshend piece for the cover, but he is thrilled. Wenner asks Brady how the pictures his brother took turned out, specifically if he thinks any of them are cover story worthy. Brady says he isn't sure, but he will tell Jimmy to bring them down. On his way out of the office, Brady asks Kylee if she would like to grab a drink with him. She accepts his offer and shouts to Wenner and Gleason that she's leaving early to grab a drink with Brady.

As the other students finish filing into the room, the professor enters. Celeste is shocked see that her new professor is none other than Brady Conroy (Josh Hartnett). She silently debates leaving the class, but instead just slumps down into her seat as Brady introduces himself to the class. Brady tells the students that his class will focus on the specifics of writing for magazines - if you want to simply type out the news for the local paper, this isn't the class for you. As Brady is talking, he notices Celeste in the back of the room slumped down in her seat. He pauses for a second before continuing on with the lecture. The entire class is sitting at the edge of their seats as Brady talks to them about covering the Altamont Free Concert and about recently interviewing The Who's Pete Townshend. At the end of the lecture, the students start to file out of the hall. Celeste tries to slip out, but Brady stops her. He asks her how she's doing. She says she's doing just fine, but can't really talk right now because she has another class to get to. Brady tells her to not be a stranger. Celeste nods and leaves the lecture hall.
At the Rolling Stone offices, Brady stands at the front desk talking to Kylee Hargrove (Alicia Witt). She tells him she had fun getting drinks with him the other night. He tells her he had a good time as well, and asks if she knows why he was called down to the office. She says she doesn't know, but is glad to see him nonetheless. Jann Wenner (Karl Glusman) comes out of his office and greets Brady. Jann tells Brady that he was just doing the final edit on the Townshend piece earlier and it will indeed be the cover story for November's issue. Brady thanks him. Jann then tells Brady to follow him into the conference room.
Brady sits down in the conference room opposite Wenner, Ralph J. Gleason (James Urbaniak) and Ben Fong-Torres (Ross Butler). Gleason tells Brady that despite his Townshend article making the cover, there is a bit of bad news. Brady asks what that could be. Gleason tells Brady that none of his brother's pictures quite fit the look they wanted for the cover. They were good, but were more action packed than they prefer, as they generally go with some more classically staged for the cover. Brady tells them his brother can do that, but Gleason tells him that they have their sights set on an image of Baba Meher for the cover rather than a picture of Townshend. Wenner asks Brady if he wouldn't mind giving his brother the bad news along with a check for the use of a couple images in the article section.
Brady enters his apartment where he finds his brother Jimmy (Lou Taylor Pucci) practicing meditation. Brady hands over the paycheck and tells Jimmy that if he becomes a Hare Krishna next he's going to kick him out of the apartment. Jimmy immediately breaks his meditating to look at the check. Brady tells Jimmy that there was a bit of an issue with the pictures. Jimmy demands to know what. Brady explains that they used his picture for the article, but they went with a different photograph for the cover. Brady is surprised that Jimmy doesn't care. Brady says he thought Jimmy would be upset. Jimmy says that he just got paid to have his pictures in an issue of Rolling Stone magazine, there's no way he could be upset right now, cover or not.
Brady wraps up another journalism lecture. Several of his female students stay after class to ask him questions. Brady is soaking up the attention while Celeste looks on, jealous. As he is leaving the building, Brady runs into Dean Alan Smalling (John C. McGinley), who tells him that he's been hearing rave reviews about the advanced journalism class. Smalling then asks if that strong word of mouth continues, the department may have to offer him a full-time position on the staff. Brady thanks Smalling for the kind words and leaves the building.
Brady heads into the Rolling Stone offices, where he finds it mostly empty aside from Ben Fong-Torres gathering his things. Ben tells Brady that everyone is out to lunch at the moment. Ben then asks Brady if he wants to tag along on an interview he has set up with Leon Russell. Together, they drive to a studio where they find Leon Russell (Tom Payne) fiddling with a piano. He insists it is out of tune, but the technicians assure him it has been tuned to his specifications already. Russell says if it was, he wouldn't think it is out of tune. When Russell sees Ben and Brady enter the studio he stops talking to the technician and greets the journalists.
For the interview, Russell sits at the piano, Ben sits on a stool, while Brady finds the only other available seat, the small stool next to a drumkit. Ben asks him the standard questions, but Russell isn't particularly interested in answering them. He instead tells a recent story about how a waitress at a restaurant in Dallas wouldn't serve him because of his long hair and beard. Russell suddenly asks for a break in the interview. Ben asks why, and Russell says he just remembered something that he wants to write down. Russell then heads into the technicians booth where he continues to berate the technician for the sound of the piano. While they wait, Brady picks up a pair of drum sticks and begins playing around on the drums. Ben is shocked that Brady is really good. Brady plays a few jazz drum fills. Russell stops his conversation with the sound technician and turns on the recorder. Russell then heads into the room and sits down at the piano. Brady stops playing, seeing that Russell is back, but Russell tells him to keep playing. Brady continues playing the drums, and Russell joins in on the piano. Ben watches the two of them in awe.

Genre: Drama / Historical
Executive Producer: Oliver Stone
Writer: D.R. Cobb
Josh Hartnett .... Brady Conroy
Aimee Teegarden .... Celeste
Alicia Witt .... Kylee Hargrove
Katherine McNamara .... Kira
Lynn Collins .... Janis Joplin
Plot: October 1970. Janis Joplin (Lynn Collins) pulls her psychedelically painted Porsche Cabriolet into the Landmark Hotel in Los Angeles. She impatiently waits by the phone, hoping for it to ring. When it doesn't, her eyes begin to focus in on a packet of heroin sitting on the bed. She tries to distract herself by turning on the television and begins watching the currently airing episode of "The Partridge Family" on ABC. She opens up a bottle of Jack Daniels and begins drinking as the episode runs.
Celeste (Aimee Teegarden) is in her dorm struggling to work on an article for her advanced journalism class. She's having trouble tying it together, and to compound the issue, her roommate Kira (Katherine McNamara) brings a boy back into the room to have sex. Celeste gets angry at Kira for bringing a boy to the room while she's doing her work, but Kira says that it's a Friday night and she should be out doing the same type of thing. Celeste leaves the dorm and heads to the campus library, but is unable to get any work done there as well. Finally, Celeste goes to a phone and dials a number.
Brady Conroy (Josh Hartnett) opens the door of his apartment and in steps Celeste. Brady offers Celeste a drink, which she accepts. Celeste then pulls out her in-progress article and asks Brady if he can read it and tell her what he thinks. Brady says that would be inappropriate and unfair to the others in the class. He says it just wouldn't be right for him to give her extra help due to their pre-existing relationship. She tells him that she doesn't want his advice as a teacher, she wants his advice as a friend. She misses the old days when they would stay up late listening to music and he'd give her advice on papers. He reminds her that the circumstances of their relationship has changed. They're no longer an item, no longer in a relationship since she moved out. He says that their relationship should remain scholarly for the time being as a teacher and his student. Celeste steps forward and kisses Brady.
Janis Joplin wakes up in her hotel room with the television blaring Saturday morning cartoons. She gets up out of the bed, head throbbing, morning lights blinding her. She stumbles over to the windows and closes the curtains. She grabs her bottle of Jack Daniels and polishes off the last slug of the drink and tosses the bottle off to the side of the bed. She then plops back down onto the bed, covering her head with a pillow.
Celeste returns to her dorm room in the morning just as Kira's date is leaving. Kira congratulates Celeste on staying out all night. Kira then asks if Celeste ever managed to finish her paper. Celeste says she didn't, but that her mind feels more clear now.
Brady heads down to the Rolling Stone office where he finds the office abuzz about Hunter S. Thompson's campaign for Sheriff of Aspen, Colorado. People are on phones calling on behalf of Thompson encouraging them to vote for him. Campaign posters litter table tops. Brady asks Kylee Hargrove (Alicia Witt) what's going on, and she explains how Thompson has been running for Sheriff. She says that Jann Wenner has allocated some of the magazine's resources to assist in the home stretch of the campaign.
That night, Janis Joplin wakes up and calls for more Jack Daniels to be brought up to her room. She then takes a look at the package of heroin. She pulls out a hypodermic needle and begins preparing a dose.

Alicia Witt .... Kylee Hargrove
James Urbaniak .... Ralph J. Gleason

Leighton Meester .... Jane Wenner
Plot: October 1970. Jann Wenner (Karl Glusman) and his wife Jane (Leighton Meester) attend Janis Joplin's wake in San Anselmo, California, at a small music club. The wake mostly consists of members of the Bay Area music scene getting drunk and filling up on hash brownies. Jane comments that it is odd that nobody is talking about Joplin at all. Jann tells his wife that he thinks that's how Joplin would have wanted it. She wanted people to have a good time, and looking around the room that seems to be the case. Jane shrugs and takes a big bite of a hash brownie.
At the Rolling Stone offices, Ralph J. Gleason (James Urbaniak) and Ben Fong-Torres (Ross Butler) sit in Gleason's office discussing how they should cover the impending sheriff's election in Aspen, Colorado, where Hunter S. Thompson is in the thick of the race. Ben suggests sending Brady Conroy to Aspen to be a fly on the wall for the lead-up to Election Day. Gleason is surprised that he would suggest Brady, but isn't opposed to the idea, and says that they could send Brady's brother as well to take pictures.
Brady Conroy (Josh Hartnett) is in his bed having sex with Celeste (Aimee Teegarden). When they are done he tells her that they really need to stop doing this. Now that he's her professor it is entirely unprofessional and unethical. Celeste kisses Brady and tells him to lighten up - nobody is going to find out anyways, and once the class is done they can go back to normal. The phone starts ringing. Brady answers it, and Ben is on the line. He asks Brady to go to Aspen to cover Election Day for Thompson's sheriff campaign. Brady says he's teaching a class the next day, but can head over afterward. Ben adds that they'd like him to bring his brother Jimmy along to take pictures. Brady is surprised after they didn't use his picture for the Pete Townshend cover story, but Ben says they like his candid photography, his work just wasn't right for the cover. Brady says he'll relay the information to his brother. Before he hangs up, Ben tells Brady to pick up the plane tickets from Kylee down at the offices. Celeste kisses Brady one more time before leaving the apartment, saying she should probably wake up in her dorm to get to her classes the next day.
Jimmy Conroy (Lou Taylor Pucci) is at a bar when he sees a woman, Lexi Davenport (Dora Madison Burge), sitting at the bar. Jimmy goes up and introduces himself. He tells her he's a professional photographer and would love to photograph her some time. Lexi laughs and asks Jimmy if that pick-up line has ever worked before. Jimmy admits that he's never tried it before since he's only recently been able to make money from his photography. She asks if she would have seen any of his pictures before, and he says that he recently photographed a Who concert for Rolling Stone magazine. She isn't terribly impressed, by that, but is intrigued when Jimmy tells her that he has some high quality weed back at his place.
When Jimmy and Lexi make it to the outside of Brady's apartment, where Jimmy is still staying, she comments that she knows somebody who lives in the building. Jimmy says it's a small world. They head up to the apartment where they find Brady. Lexi says hi to Brady and comments to Jimmy that Brady would be that somebody. Jimmy comments that it's a really small world and asks how she knows Brady. She says it's complicated, and Jimmy quickly figures out that they have had sex together.
After class, Brady heads into the Rolling Stone offices and heads over to the desk of Kylee Hargrove (Alicia Witt). He asks her how she is doing since it's been a bit since they've seen each other. She says she's good and asks him if he wants to get drinks once he's back from Colorado. He says that it sounds like a plan. Brady collects the plane tickets from Kylee and heads home to pick up Jimmy. Jimmy and Lexi are naked on the couch, having just had sex. Brady chastises Jimmy for not being ready to head to the airport. Jimmy looks at a clock and is surprised by the time. He quickly gets dressed and tells Brady he's ready to go. Lexi leaves the apartment telling them both she is sure she'll be seeing them around.

November 1970. Brady Conroy (Josh Hartnett) and Jimmy Conroy (Lou Taylor Pucci) hold on for dear life as the small plane they're riding in has a rocky landing at a small Colorado airport. They exit the plane and find it is snowing. Hunter S. Thompson (Stephen Dorff) skids to a stop on the runway in a convertible with the top down. Thompson tells them to hop in, there's work to do. Brady and Jimmy get in the back seat and Thompson speeds away from the airport. Thompson doesn't seem bothered by the kid, even with his recently shaved head, but Brady and Jimmy are freezing in the back seat as Thompson drives erratically down a mountain road.
Finally they arrive at Thompson's house and campaign headquarters at Woody Creek. Brady immediately asks why there are so many armed guards around the property. Thompson nonchalantly mentions that there were bomb threats sent to City Hall that explosives would be used if he won the election for Pitkin County Sheriff. Brady asks Thompson why exactly he chose to run for sheriff, and Thompson explains that he just wanted to shake up the establishment. His "Freak Power" running mate for mayor, Joe Edwards, only lost the election for Aspen Mayor by a handful of votes, so clearly there is a market for their particular brand of anti-establishment ideas, and Thompson wanted to see it through.
As the election results are rolling in on the television, it is announced that Thompson has lost the election by 90 votes to his Republican opponent. Thompson grabs one of his many guns and shoots the television. He then smiles and suggests that everyone get good and drunk. Brady asks Thompson if he is upset about losing the election. Thompson says he wanted to shake things up, but at least he managed to scare the establishment, and that's pretty alright with him. The armed guards put away their guns and start handing out cans of beer to everyone on the property.
On the plane ride back to San Francisco, Brady begins writing out an article on the election day events. The plane hits a big patch of turbulence. Jimmy calls for the flight attendant and tells her that he's going to need all the alcohol on the plane if he's going to handle any more turbulence.
Back in San Francisco, Brady heads to the Rolling Stone offices where he is greeted by Kylee Hargrove (Alicia Witt). She asks him how the trip went. Brady says that the election didn't exactly go as everyone there had hoped but that it was an interesting trip nonetheless. Jann Wenner (Karl Glusman) comes out of his office and welcomes Brady back to town. Brady hands him what he has written from the trip, and Wenner tells him he's excited to read his insights.
When Brady gets home he finds Jimmy entertaining their mother Colleen (Frances Conroy). It is apparent that even with his prison stint, Jimmy is their mother's favorite. He is showing her the pictures he has been taking since working for the magazine. Colleen comments that it was nice of Brady to help Jimmy find an outlet for his photography talent. Brady says he's tired and going to bed, but that he'll presumably see them both in the morning. When he goes into his bedroom he finds Celeste (Aimee Teegarden) waiting in his bed under the covers. Brady is surprised to see her. Celeste tells him that she wanted to surprise him naked in bed. She didn't plan on waiting this long, but she got startled when Jimmy and the woman entered the apartment so she's been hiding in the bed ever since. Brady says that the woman is his mother. Celeste is then even more nervous and asks how she's supposed to sneak out of the apartment with his mother in the next room. Brady tells her that she doesn't have to sneak out and gets into the bed with her.

November 1970. Brady Conroy (Josh Hartnett) wakes up in bed next to Celeste (Aimee Teegarden) who is still asleep. He gets up and finds his mother Colleen (Frances Conroy) in the kitchen cooking eggs and bacon. Jimmy Conroy (Lou Taylor Pucci) is asleep on the floor next to the couch. Brady asks his mother what exactly she's doing, and she tells him that it is Thanksgiving in a few days. Brady is clearly surprised by this and repeats his previous question. Colleen says that she missed her sons and since her father died she wanted to spend some time with Brady and Jimmy and Thanksgiving seemed like as good of a time as any. Brady tells her that he's going into the office, but that he'll be back later. Colleen tells him to stay until after he's eaten breakfast, and Brady begrudgingly sits at the kitchen table while Colleen serves him up eggs and bacon. She then asks him if his lady friend would like some breakfast. Brady looks confused, but Colleen tells him that she wasn't born yesterday. She knows he has a woman in his room. She's not judging, just wanting to know if she's hungry.
Brady walks into his bedroom and wakes Celeste up. He tells her that his mom wants to know if she wants breakfast. Embarrassed by the situation, Brady and Celeste both sit down at the kitchen table for breakfast. Colleen asks how they know each other, and Brady says it's complicated. Celeste says they met at the university. Colleen seems to understand the situation and doesn't ask any more questions on that matter. She tells them to eat up, breakfast is the most important meal of the day after all. Colleen then leaves the kitchen and begins the difficult task of waking Jimmy up. Brady apologizes to Celeste, but she says not to worry about it and says the food is good.
Brady enters the Rolling Stone offices, but finds it mostly dead. Kylee Hargrove (Alicia Witt) sits at the front desk. Brady goes over to her and asks where everyone is, and she says that most of the staff went out of town to spend Thanksgiving with their families. He asks her why she's still around, and she says that her family all lives in the area so there was no excuse to leave town. He tells her he was just going to edit some of his articles a bit, and she motions to all the empty desks and says there's plenty of room. Brady sits down at an empty desk and pulls some papers out of his bag. Kylee walks over to him and hands him a slip of paper. He asks what it is, and she tells him it's her address. She invites him over for some drinks later that night. Brady says that sounds nice. Kylee then says she's leaving for the day since nobody's there and hands him a key, telling him to lock up the office when he's done.
Brady shows up at Kylee's house and knocks at the door. The door is answered by Kylee's teenage daughter Angelica (Sadie Sink). She walks away from the door, leaving it open for Brady to walk in, and yells for her mom. Kylee then emerges and leads Brady out to her back patio where they sit down. Brady says he didn't know she had a kid. Kylee says why else would she work so many hours at the magazine, she has a kid to send to college soon. Kylee explains that she had Angelica when she was in high school and her boyfriend was getting ready to head over to fight in the Korean War. Brady asks if the dead is in the picture, and Kylee says he is not. She then says that Angelica is about to go out with some friends, so they can have the house to themselves.
Celeste returns to campus to find it a ghost town. She enters her dorm room and finds her roommate Kira (Katherine McNamara) packing up a bag with her brother Kyle (Kieran Culkin). Kira says that she and her brother are driving to Sacramento to their parents' hosue for Thanksgiving. Kyle asks Celeste if she's going home for the holiday. Celeste says that her parents are flying her home for Christmas, but they couldn't afford Thanksgiving as well. Kyle says she can tag along to Sacramento and spend the holiday with their family if she wants. Kira says her family is only kind of dysfunctional, but Celeste politely declines.
Brady and Kylee have sex in her house and share a joint afterward. Brady asks Kylee what they are. Kylee is confused by the question, and Brady asks Kylee if she is looking for a relationship. Kylee laughs at the question, saying that between work and raising a teenage daughter, she doesn't have time for any kind of romantic relationship. She says that Brady and her are friends with benefits. Brady asks her to elaborate, and Kylee says they are friends who will occasionally have sex without all the baggage of a relationship. Brady says that sounds good to him.
Celeste sits in her dorm room alone listening to The Doors when she hears a knock at the door. She opens it and finds Brady standing there. He hands her an envelope and tells her that his mom wanted him to invite her to have Thanksgiving Dinner with them. Celeste opens the envelope and pulls out an ornate handmade invitation card done in caligraphy. She tells Brady to tell his mom she accepts the invitation.

Plot: December 1970. Brady Conroy (Josh Hartnett) is in a lecture hall at UC Berkeley getting ready to teach a class when the head of the journalism department, Dean Alan Smalling (John C. McGinley) enters and informs him that he'll be sitting in on the class that day as part of Brady's annual evaluation. Brady is slightly nervous since his class has become a bit more unorthodox due to his work with Rolling Stone, but decides not to change his plans for that next class. Students start to file into the room. Celeste (Aimee Teegarden) smiles at Brady, but Brady doesn't give her any kind of response, not wanting Smalling to notice anything along the lines of what got him fired originally.
Jimmy Conroy (Lou Taylor Pucci) and Lexi Davenport (Dora Madison Burge) are drinking beer beneath the Golden Gate Bridge. Lexi asks Jimmy if he would be willing to shoot a cover of her for an album she's working on. He says absolutely. She adds that she can't afford to pay him, and he says that money isn't everything. She agrees and begins to strip. Jimmy and Lexi start to have sex in the broad daylight, until they are stopped by a police officer. They quickly stop and apologize to the officer, saying they got a little carried away. The officer tells them to leave the area at once or he'll arrest them for indecent exposure. Lexi thanks the officer for the warning and they leave. Jimmy tells her it's a good thing the officer didn't search him as he pulls out a joint. Jimmy lights it up and passes it to Lexi as they walk down the road.
Brady is talking to his class about the interview of Leon Russell that he sat in on. He says as much as the facts are your friends when writing a magazine article, sometimes you have to have the ability to loosen up the subject if you want to get a decent interview out of it. Brady looks over at Smalling and sees him taking notes on the class. Brady takes a deep breath and describes how his ability to play the drums made Russell drop his guard and give less guarded and more honest and in turn interesting answers to Ben Fong-Torres' questions. Celeste raises her hand and asks what one should do if they aren't a good drummer or have a common talent with their interview subject. Brady explains that nine times out of ten you should be able to find some sort of common interest or common ground with the interview subject. And if that doesn't work, buy them a beer. The class laughs, but Brady looks over to Smalling and doesn't see so much as a smile.
Jimmy has his camera out and takes many pictures of a nearly completely naked Lexi for her album cover. He photographs her and she barely covers herself up with a blanket on Brady's couch. After a while, he suggests they finish what they started under the bridge, and Lexi uncovers herself with the blanket and walks over to Jimmy. She unzips his pants and starts giving him a blowjob. Jimmy aims his camera down and begins taking pictures of the act.
Brady sits down with Smalling after the class to go over the evaluation. Smalling says that he doesn't necessarily agree with everything Brady said or all of his methods, he didn't violate any university rules and clearly the students seem to be responding to his methods. Brady simply nods throughout Smalling's assessment trying to keep himself from sweating. Smalling eventually says that Brady has passed his evaluation and will be offered a contract to return for the rest of the current school year. Brady shakes Smalling's hand, and Smalling leaves the lecture hall.
Brady heads into the Rolling Stone office and finds it empty aside from Jann Wenner (Karl Glusman) and Ralph J. Gleason (James Urbaniak). When Jenner notices Brady in the office, he calls out for Brady to join them in the conference room. Wenner tell Brady they've been impressed with his reporting ability, but that if he's going to truly be a permanent member of the music press, he's going to need to ability to simply write about the music itself - not just the environment of concerts and interviewing musicians. Gleason pulls out a copy of the untitled debut album of The J. Geils Band and slides it over to Brady. Gleason says that Atlantic Records would like a review of the album to appear in the magazine. Wenner tells Brady that they want him to listen to the album and write a short review, just a few paragraphs. It will be good experience for Brady, and it will also keep Atlantic happy enough to continue to allow them decent press access to their clients and events.

December 1970. Brady Conroy (Josh Hartnett) listens to the debut album of The J. Geils Band trying to review it for Rolling Stone. He expresses his frustration with writing the piece to Celeste (Aimee Teegarden). He explains that he's great at reporting the facts in an interesting manner, but working on something so subjective as reviewing music is proving to be problematic for him. Celeste rolls her eyes and tells him not to think about the article through the eyes of a reporter, but rather through the eyes of someone who appreciates music. She says a music review shouldn't be about facts, but about how the music makes him feel. He expresses that the album doesn't really make him feel much. The music is well done, but the album doesn't fit into any one genre - it's part blues, part R & B, and part rock and roll - and that the album lacks a breakout song to help it stand out. Celeste says Brady should start writing down what he's saying to her. Brady furiously jots down what he just said to Celeste. Brady then thanks Celeste for helping him on that one.
Brady heads down to the Rolling Stone offices to turn in his album review. He is greeted by Kylee Hargrove (Alicia Witt) at the front desk. She asks what he is turning in, and he says it's an album review. Kylee laughs, and Brady asks why. She says that they used to always pawn those assignments off onto Ben, but it seems Jann and Ralph found someone else to carry some of the weight. Brady says he doesn't like the sound of it. Kylee says that the reviews may be a bit of filler, but that they're important to keep the record companies happy. Plus, it at least shows that the editors trust Brady's opinion. Kylee then asks Brady if he's going to come to the company Christmas party next week, and Brady says he honestly didn't know about it. Kylee says he should come and seductively bends over to reach for a check for Brady.
Brady and Kylee have sex in the office supply closet. Afterward, they are caught leaving the office by Ralph J. Gleason (James Urbaniak) calls Brady into his office. Gleason tells Brady that he doesn't care what two grown adults choose to do with their time or their bodies, but he doesn't want anything to get messy or tense around the office. Brady nods his head and thanks Gleason. As Brady is leaving, Gleason suggests they find some place more private next time since everyone could hear them.
Brady and Celeste drive down to UC Berkeley together. He's going to pack up his things since the semester has ended, while she is going to get some things from her dorm since the campus will be closed for the Winter Break. While Brady is grabbing his stuff he runs into Dean Alan Smalling (John C. McGinley), who asks him if he's thought about becoming a full-time professor again. Brady says that he would like to finish out the rest of the school year just teaching the one advanced journalism class, but would be willing to think about adding a class or two for the next school year. He just doesn't think his schedule with the magazine can accommodate a full-time teaching profession, and he's still committed to doing both for the time being. Smalling tells Brady that he appreciates his honesty, but that at some point Brady is going to have to choose who he wants to be. Smalling says that he hopes Brady will choose a life of academia rather than the life of some sort of beatnik.
Celeste enters her dorm and finds her roommate Kira (Katherine McNamara) in bed with yet another guy. Celeste tells them not to mind her, she's just packing some stuff up for the Winter Break. When Celeste gets into Brady's car, he tells her that she shouldn't go home for the holidays. She asks what he thinks she should do, and he says that she should stay with him and be his date for the Rolling Stone Christmas party. She asks what she should tell her parents, and he says she could say she's staying with a friend - or she could simply tell them the truth. Celeste laughs, saying they would just love that - telling her parents that their only daughter is shacking up with her 35 year old college professor slash lover. Brady admits that maybe the truth doesn't sound so good, at least not at this time.
When Brady and Celeste get back to his apartment, they find his brother Jimmy (Lou Taylor Pucci) and mother Colleen (Frances Conroy) decorating a Christmas tree in the living room. Brady asks what they're doing, and Colleen says they're getting the place more festive. Brady says that he never okayed something like that. The tree takes up too much space for his liking. Celeste tells him to lighten up, it's just a stupid tree. Colleen tells Celeste it's nice to see her again, and asks if she's going to be around for Christmas. Colleen is planning on making a ham for Christmas dinner and needs to know what size of ham to get. Brady looks at Celeste, and she says that she would love to spend Christmas with them. Jimmy jokes about the love birds spending their first Christmas together with the family. Brady tells Jimmy that if he wants to keep talking he can find his own place to live. Jimmy says he'll shut up.

December 1970. Brady Conroy (Josh Hartnett) sits down for Christmas dinner with Celeste (Aimee Teegarden), his brother Jimmy Conroy (Lou Taylor Pucci), and his mother Colleen Conroy (Frances Conroy). Colleen tells her sons that she is glad that they are all able to sit down as a family even after their father passed away. Lexi Davenport (Dora Madison Burge) shows up at the door with a mistletoe over her head. Brady asks his mother if she wants to come to the Rolling Stone Christmas party, but she politely declines. Brady, Jimmy, Celeste and Lexi then all leave for the party.
Brady, Jimmy, Celeste and Lexi enter the Rolling Stone offices unsure of what the expect. They find a fairly traditional office party much to their surprise. Kylee Hargrove (Alicia Witt) greets everyone and gives them all Santa hats to wear around the party. Jann Wenner (Karl Glusman) and his wife Jane Wenner (Leighton Meester) are talking to Ralph J. Gleason (James Urbaniak) and Ben Fong-Torres (Ross Butler) when they spot Brady and call him over. Brady introduces them to Celeste, who is impressed since she is a long time reader of the magazine. Jane offers to give Celeste a tour around the office while the guys talk. Jane asks Celeste how long she's been with Brady, and she says a while, but there have been some complicated stretches. Jane asks Celeste what she does, and Celeste says she's a student at UC Berkeley.
Jann Wenner gives Brady an envelope and says it's his Christmas bonus. Brady opens the envelope and inside are two back stage passes to the Grateful Dead's New Years Eve Concert at the Winterland. Brady thanks Wenner, and Gleason says that Brady gets to enjoy the show since he doesn't need to report on the event. Wenner says it's not just a Christmas present, but a way to congratulate Brady on his first year with Rolling Stone. Suddenly, the office doors burst open and Hunter S. Thompson (Stephen Dorff) enters the party, already drunk, with a bottle of whiskey in hand. He starts passing around tabs of LSD. Jimmy and Lexi jump at the chance to do LSD and introduce themselves to Thompson. He gives them two tabs and asks them if they know where the booze is.
On New Years Eve, Brady and Celeste head to the Winterland Arena for the Grateful Dead concert. They dance together throughout the show. Brady and Celeste head back stage after the show. Celeste is excited being that close to some of her favorite musicians. Brady says that he felt the same way at first as well, but the feeling went away as he met more and more musical figures through his work at the magazine. Brady runs into some other magazine writers, and Celeste explores backstage. Realizing Celeste isn't with him anymore, Brady starts searching around the back stage area, eventually finding Celeste sitting and talking with Grateful Dead guitarist and singer Bob Weir (Blake Jenner). When Brady sees Celeste talking to Weir, he is overcome with jealousy and butts in the conversation, telling Celeste he was looking for her every where. Celeste has never seen this side of Brady before. Weir tells Brady that he isn't trying to scam on his lady, which calms Brady down a bit.
On the drive home, Brady admits to Celeste that he was jealous seeing her talk to Bob Weir. Celeste tells Brady that she isn't some groupie looking to sleep with rock stars, no matter how talented and handsome they are. Brady doesn't have a response and Celeste starts laughing. She asks him why he was jealous, and Brady tells Celeste that he loves her. Celeste is surprised that he used the word "love" since he's been so hesitant to say it in the past. He tells her that he's been thinking about getting older lately and he doesn't want to do that without her. Celeste is taken aback by Brady's honesty and asks him why he's telling her all this. He tells her he honesty isn't sure.
January 1971. In the morning, Brady finds Jimmy helping their mother pack up her car. Jimmy and Lexi then start packing their bags into her car. Brady asks what's going on, and Jimmy tells him that he and Lexi are going to drive their mother back home to Riverside and maybe hang out around there for a little bit. Before they leave, Colleen tells Brady that it's clear that he loves Celeste and recommends that he not let her get away like he did with his ex-wife since love is hard to find.
