Raptor Red
Genre: Adventure / Animation
Director: Brad Bird
Writer: Clive Steinbeck
Based on the novel by Robert T. Bakker
Plot: Red, a female Utahraptor, and her mate are ambush a herd of Astrodon while out on a hunt. They surprise the Astrodon's and manage to take one down with their teamwork. Red's mate climbs onto the dead Astrodon, but the corpse rolls in mud and traps the male Utahraptor under it. Red tries to rescue her mate, but he suffocates. Red, despondent, wanders around, nearly starving since a Utahraptor does not know how to hunt big game on its own.
One day, Red catches a familiar scent and follows it, ultimately finding her sister and her chicks. The two start hunting together and bring food back to the chicks at the nest. A white pterosaur helps the two by finding prey in exchange for a helping of meat. On a hunting trip, while the two adult Utahraptors are stalking a herd of Iguanodon, Red spies a young Utahraptor that is watching their prey. He begins a courtship dance for Red, but Red's sister chases him off. Red encounters the male raptor again, who performs a courtship dance while hanging onto the tree branches during a flash flood. Red's sister begrudgingly allows the male to stay with them, provided he steers clear of her chicks.
For a while, Red and her pack are happy, but their way of life is upset by an invasion of Acrocanthosaurus, huge carnivorous dinosaurs. The Utahraptors are attacked by some Acrocanthosaurus, killing the youngest chick and forcing Red, her sister and the chicks into the mountains. Red's sister banishes the male Utahraptor from the group.
They encounter snow and ice for the first time and kill a segnosaur in a cave, which they turn into a new nest. While hunting with the oldest of the chicks, Red and her sister are injured by the tail of a diplodocid, forcing the oldest chick to hunt alone. A large pack of Deinonychus raptors surround the nest, waiting for the wounded raptors to become weak enough to attack.
Red's sister dies from her wounds, and Red is crippled and defenseless. The Deinonychus close in and wait for Red to die, but are driven back by the oldest chick and the male Utahraptor who arrive and drive back the Deinoychus pack.
Some time later, The white pterosaur circles over the mountain, finding the Utahraptor pack has grown. Both Red and the older chick have found mates and have chicks.

REVIEWS
"Yes, the animation is well-done, but this is a film without an audience outside of the paleontologist set." - Michael Van Patten, Slant Magazine
"The photo-realistic animation is absolutely stunning, with the attention to detail on both the dinosaurs and the world around them impressive." - Tom Lane, Detroit News
"It's nice when the studios take chances, but this one comes across as poorly thought out. Who wants to watch a nearly 2-hour long silent film about dinosaurs trying to survive? Providing voices for the characters, or even a narrator would have helped tremendously." - Janet Donnelly, Empire Magazine
Rated PG for intense images and scenes of peril
