Plot: Vincent Cain (Michael Madsen) is an aging action star past his prime. He is on the set of his latest movie, a low budget action film shooting in the desert. Cain argues with his agent (Joel McHale) over the phone when he finds out the production has him staying in a flea bag motel. While shooting an emotional scene, Cain gets mad at the director (Michael Sheen) for his lack of direction. As Cain yells at the director, he begins coughing up blood.
Back in LA, Cain goes to see his doctor (Tony Shalhoub), who tells him he has advanced lung cancer. The doctor says he has only a small chance of beating it with extensive treatments. Cain declines any treatment.
Cain goes to his pop star daughter Candy Cain's (Hailee Steinfeld) concert and waits for her backstage. She surprised to see him as they haven't spoken in some time. They end up talking about a trip to the Cannes Film Festival they took when she was younger. Candy can tell something is going on with her dad, but Cain decides not to tell her about his illness.
Cain calls his ex-wife Alice (Famke Janssen) and tells her that he has wasted and thrown away all the good things in his life. She is unsympathetic. He asks to see her, but she declines, hanging up on him.
Cain goes to lunch at a small diner and ends up signing autographs for several of the patrons. The waitress (Christina Hendricks) flirts with him. He asks when she gets off work, and she says in an hour. They end up going back to his mansion, where they have sex. Afterward he has a coughing fit and passes out.
Cain rides his motorcycle up the California coast, away from LA. He pulls over in an isolated spot, and begins walking toward the ocean.

REVIEWS
"Michael Madsen delivers a solid performance, but the film greatly suffers from its lack of a plot." - Charles Yost, Oregonian
"A true character study and seemingly an homage to Federico Fellini films like 8½ and Toby Dammit, Last Rites is an engrossing film, with Michael Madsen occupying every frame." - Jon Farrell, Hollywood Reporter
"Michael Madsen has always been a talented actor that directors (other than Quentin Tarantino) have had trouble figuring out how to utilize. Here, he is given room to breathe and stretch his acting muscles, and the film benefits from it." - Mark Rawls, Seattle Times
Rated R for strong language, sexual content and nudity
