Plot: 1945 - The Battle of Okinawa. Exploding mortar shells kick earth up into the air as Cole Phelps (Joe Alwyn) and his fellow U.S. Marines begin trying to push through the enemy lines at Sugar Loaf Hill. A bunch of Japanese soldiers seemingly pop out of nowhere. Phelps tackles his friend Hank Merril (Gabriel Basso) out of the way and opens fires on the enemy combatants. In the fire fight, the rest of their battalion is killed, leaving just Phelps and Merril to fend for themselves. Phelps suggests they fall back, but Merril protests, citing their orders to continue pushing forward. They begin crawling forward through the tall grass to avoid detection, eventually stumbling upon a foxhole. Phelps says they need to rest. Merril digs through his pack for some provisions when suddenly he is ripped to shreds by an explosion. Cole looks on in shock, as pieces of Merril are scattered throughout the foxhole. Cole looks down at his hands and feels what has to be a piece of Merril's skull. Cole stares straight ahead. The next morning, a group of Marines find Cole sitting next to Merril's remains.
1947 - Los Angeles. Cole Phelps is now a police officer in Los Angeles. He is walking with his partner Officer Ralph Dunn (Michael Mosley) back to their squad car after getting a cup of coffee when they hear a call from dispatch over their radio. Dunn answers the call immediately. The dispatcher informs them of a shooting at 16th and Industrial Street and that the officers already on location are requesting uniform assistance for an evidence search. Dunn responds, telling the dispatcher they are on their way. Cole gets behind the wheel and begins driving towards the location. Cole speeds through the developing streets of Los Angeles, sirens blaring.
When Phelps and Dunn arrive, they see a body being placed in the coroner's van and being driven away. A Homicide Detective at the scene, Det. Floyd Rose (Josh Charles) asks if they are the backup. Cole responds in the affirmative and introduces himself and Dunn, saying they are from the Wilshire Precinct. Floyd then briefs them on the situation. He tells them that the victim was a black male named Scooter Peyton, who was shot in the alleyway and is on the way to the Central Morgue. Rose says that witnesses claim a tall Caucasian male shot Peyton twice in the head and then tossed his weapon before fleeing the scene. Floyd tells Dunn and Phelps that he's tasking them with finding the gun, since he could care less about the death of a lowlife like Peyton.
With their flash lights out, Phelps and Dunn search through the alleyway. Dunn freezes and aims his light at the sizable blood splatter on a nearby doorway. Phelps walks by the blood stain when suddenly he freezes. Something has caught his attention. Dunn asks him what it is, and Phelps points to an open window. Dunn is confused, thinking Phelps is suggesting the killer through the gun through it, saying that wouldn't be much of a place to hide a murder weapon. Phelps tells him to look in the reflection on the window, but Dunn doesn't notice anything. Phelps walks around a corner to a drainpipe and begins climbing it. Dunn is confused. Phelps climbs all the way up to the rooftop where he finds the gun. He then slides back down the drainpipe. Dunn demands to know what the hell Phelps was doing, when Phelps pulls the murder weapon out of his pocket. Dunn is excited and wants to turn the gun into the station, but Phelps suggests they try to get the name of the gun's owner first, and asks Dunn if there is a gun store nearby. Dunn says there's one just a couple of blocks away.
At the gun store, the gun owner remembers selling the gun, a Smith & Wesson Model 27. Phelps is surprised that the store owner would remember the weapon in particular, but the owner says that the grip was custom so it had to be special ordered. He tells them that the gun was purchased by Errol Schroeder. Dunn says they should call their findings in, but Phelps says they're not going to get any where in the department without showing initiative and insists they go pay Schroeder a visit.
When they arive at Schroeder's address, Phelps immediately hops out of the car and checks the apartment complex's directory for Schroeder's apartment number. Phelps and Dunn make their way up the complex's stairs and knock on the door. Errol Schroeder (Todd Stashwick) answers and demands to know what they want. They ask if he owns a Smith & Wesson Model 27. Schroeder confirms that he does. Phelps then informs him of the murder of Scooter Peyton. Schroeder does not seem surprised by this news, but insists that he didn't have anything to do with it. He tells them that his gun is safely tucked away in a drawer in his living room. He walks over to his drawer to show the officers that his gun is where he said it is. He opens the drawer, but finds the gun is missing. Phelps tells Schroeder that he is under arrest for the murder of Scooter Peyton. Schroeder tries to make a run for it, knocking Dunn to the floor. Phelps punches Schroeder, knocking him out. Phelps then cuffs Schroeder as he lays on the floor of his apartment.
With Schroeder cuffed on the floor, Phelps begins looking around the apartment for any other useful clues. In a dresser, Phelps finds a green notebook. Phelps begins to look through it and he determines it to be a list of bribes that have been given out, showing the name of each person and the amount given to them. Phelps scrolls through the list when he stops at the name Floyd Rose. Phelps asks if that was the name of the detective from the crime scene. Dunn confirms the information. Phelps wonders aloud if maybe Floyd had something to do with Scooter Peyton's death. Dunn tells him that such a question is way above their pay grade. Dunn says to call in their arrest of Errol Schroeder and leave the notebook where he found it. Phelps agrees, and places the notebook on top of the dresser.
Detective Rusty Galloway (Brent Sexton) arrives at the crime scene, relieving Phelps and Dunn. He thanks them for their diligent work, but tells them that he and his partner, Floyd Rose, will handle the case from here.
Phelps returns home to his small bungalow-style house in one of the many new housing developments on the outskirts of the city. He walks inside where he is greeted by his wife, Marie (Katie Findlay). She asks how work was, but he doesn't want to get into it, he just wants to get some sleep.

Plot:1942 - Cole Phelps (Joe Alwyn) is assigned to the Marine Corps Installation Camp Elliott for Officer Candidate School. Upon his arrival, Phelps meets some of the other officer candidates, Hank Merrill (Gabriel Basso) and Jack Kelso (Christopher Abbott). Phelps almost immediately gets on Kelso's nerves with his arrogant demeanor, leading to a fist fight breaking out. Merrill gets between Phelps and Kelso to break up the fight. Alerted by the commotion, the drill instructor Sgt. Chisholm (Reed Diamond) orders the soldiers to stop fighting. Sgt. Chisholm begins berating Phelps, Kelso and Merrill. He tells them that he hopes the Japanese kill all three of them quickly to do the world a favor.
1947 - Cole Phelps and his partner Ralph Dunn (Michael Mosley) are driving in their squad car when they get a call over the radio of a robbery in progress at Westlake Savings & Loans. They answer the call since they're just a few blocks away. With their siren blaring, the pair skid to a stop in front of the bank. Phelps fetches a shotgun from the trunk of the squad car as one of the robbers opens fire on the two officers. Phelps kills the robber with a blast from his shotgun. Dunn suggests they hold down the front until backup arrives. Phelps says he doesn't like to wait and runs to the bank's entrance. The remaining robbers inside open fire at the front entrance, and Phelps ducks behind a pillar. Phelps calls out to Dunn, telling him to get his back. Dunn then begrudgingly joins Phelps at the bank entrance. Phelps exits his cover and charges toward the robbers, killing them both with shotgun blasts. Phelps calls out, informing Dunn that the bank is now clear.
1942 - In the barracks at Camp Elliott, Phelps is talking to Merrill, telling him that if he can make a name for himself in this war he can practically write his own future. Kelso scoffs at Phelps' words. Phelps tells Kelso that he wasn't talking to him. Kelso doesn't care and goes on to say that his instructors in basic training said there's a term for officers who think like Phelps: Custer Syndrome. Guys who go around dreaming of fame and glory and end up getting all of their men killed in the process. Phelps tries to remind Kelso that the job of an officer is to be a leader of men. Kelso says that doesn't mean his job is to lead men to their deaths for his own glory. Kelso then walks out of the barracks.
1947 - Detective Rusty Galloway (Brent Sexton) arrives at the scene of the Westlake Savings & Loans robbery and greets Phelps and Dunn. He comments that Phelps is making quite the name for himself in his short time on the force. Phelps thanks Galloway for the kind words, but Galloway says being well-known in the department can be a double-edged sword and to be careful.
County Coroner Malcolm Carruthers (Jordan Gelber) arrives on the scene to take away the bodies of the robbers Phelps killed. Carruthers is surprised to hear that Phelps took out all three robbers. Phelps finishes up giving the narrative of the robbery to Galloway and prepares to head back to the precinct. As he walks away from the crime scene, Carruthers asks Phelps to do him a favor. Phelps asks what, and Carruthers asks him to not kill so many crooks in the future. Phelps tells Carruthers he can't promise that and gets into the squad car with Dunn. Dunn asks Phelps if he has any plans after work. Phelps simply says he plans on going home to see the mother of his children.
After teaching a psychology lecture at the University of Southern California, Dr. Harlan Fontaine (Frederick Weller) is approached by Courtney Sheldon (Daniel Webber). Sheldon thanks Fontaine for the lecture. Fontaine asks if Sheldon is thinking of focusing of psychiatry, but Sheldon tells him he is just a second year med student, although the school fast tracked him a year based on his experience as a field medic during the war. Sheldon gets to the point of why he approached Dr. Fontaine, and asks if there is a treatment for battle fatigue and trauma. Fontaine perks up from the topic, saying that the mind is the last great scientific mystery. He goes on to say that trauma forces the mind to close down and retreat in on itself, but that he is looking to find ways to unlock the mind again through a combination of therapy and drug treatment. He says that hypnosis and therapy can be powerful tools in the right hands. Sheldon tells Fontaine that he recently visited a friend of his from the war at the V.A. hospital, but he seems like a ghost of his former self. Fontaine tells Sheldon that if he gives him the details of his friend he will make a prognosis. Sheldon is happy that Fontaine would be willing to help his friend and asks how he can repay him. Fontaine tells Sheldon that he can come and work at one of his clinics in his spare time to repay the debt. Sheldon excitedly agrees to the deal.

Plot: 1942 - At Camp Elliott, Sgt. Chisholm (Reed Diamond) explains that part of the tradition of the Marine Corps and especially being an officer in the Marine Corps is the ability to make tough decisions. He explains that the right decision isn't always the popular one, and that the right decision very well get the men you care about killed. He says that the ratings he has asked them to give each other and each cadidate's ability to give them frankly and truthfully will directly affect their chances of successfully becoming an officer in the United States Marine Corps. He then gives the floor to Cole Phelps (Joe Alwyn) to give his ratings for his fellow officer candidates. He gives fairly good ratings to each of his fellow candidates, including Hank Merrill (Gabriel Basso), but gives Jack Kelso (Christopher Abbott) a failing score in every possible category. Kelos grits his teeth as Phelps reads the ratings in front of the everyone. Sgt. Chisholm orders Kelso to explain himself. Kelso apologizes to Sgt. Chisholm, but goes on to say that he joined the Marine Corps to fight the enemey, not get involved in this schoolboy chickenshit. Sgt. Chisholm demands Kelso to head to his office immediately. Kelso then storms out of the room.
1947 - Phelps and his partner Roy Dunn (Michael Mosley) are driving in their squad car when Dunn asks Phelps to tell him about his time in the war. Phelps tells Dunn that friends who want to stay friends should never discuss religion or politics, and his case the war. As they continue driving, Dunn spots a man walking down the side of the road. He recognizes the man as Wendell Bowers (Happy Anderson). Phelps asks how he knows the man, and Dunn explains that he put Bowers away before and that he jumped parole. Dunn flicks on the squad car's siren and makes a sudden U-turn to face Bowers with the car. Dunn tells Phelps to chase after him, while he heads him off in the car. Phelps jumps out of the car and begins chasing Bowers down an alley way.
Phelps chases Bowers down a long series of alley ways. Dunn, in the squad car, cuts Bowers off. Bowers then proceeds to climb up the ladder of a fire escape. As Phelps follows Bowers up the fire escape, Dunn starts firing his service revolver at Bowers. Phelps yells at Dunn to stop firing, he doesn't want to get hit by any fragments or ricocheting bullets. Phelps then yells at Bowers to stop once again, saying he's only making things worse with each step. Bowers escapes to the rooftop of the building. When Phelps finally reaches the roof, he sees Bowers climbing up a pipe toward the top of a neighboring building. Phelps grabs hold of the pipe and starts climbing.
Once Phelps gets to the next rooftop, he finds Bowers waiting for him. Phelps tells Bowers there is nowhere to run now and implores him to come along willingly. Bowers laughs at Phelps' suggestion and pulls out a switchblade. Phelps disarms Bowers with one quick move. Bowers begins punching Phelps in the stomach, knocking him to his knees. Bowers tries to kick Phelps in the face, but Phelps rolls over to his side and pulls out his revolver. Phelps quickly fires two shots into the chest of Bowers. Clutching his chest, Bowers begins stumbling backward, falling over the edge of the building. Phelps looks over the edge to the street below where he sees Bowers' body lying on the sidewalk next to Dunn in the parked squad car. Phelps yells down to Dunn and asks if Bowers is dead. Dunn looks at the two bullet holes in Bowers' chest and yells back in the affirmative. Dunn then adds that he almost hit the squad car.
Malcolm Carruthers (Jordan Gelber), the County Coroner, arrives on the scene at the same time as Detectives Rusty Galloway (Brent Sexton) and Floyd Rose (Josh Charles). Carruthers tells Phelps that he thought he told Phelps to not kill anyone. Phelps corrects Carruthers, saying that Carruthers told him not to kill as many people in the future. This time he only killed one criminal, not three like at the bank robbery. Floyd jokes about not wanting to be on Phelps' bad side. Galloway reminds Phelps of what he said about making a name for yourself not always being a good thing.
Phelps finishes up his paperwork at the station and returns home just in time for dinner with his wife Marie (Katie Findlay) and his two young daughters. Over the dinner of chicken and salad, Marie asks Phelps if anything interesting happened at work today. He looks down at the plate in front of him and tells Marie it was just another day at war. Marie is confused by his answer, and Phelps laughs it off, saying he meant another day on the force. She gives him a concerned look. Phelps tells her that nothing all that interesting happened. He stopped a couple jaywalkers and wrote some tickets, nothing exciting.

They quickly run toward the shots and find a man dead on the sidewalk in front of a shoe store with two bullet holes in his back. Dunn starts setting up a perimeter around the crime scene and suggests that Phelps start looking for clues before the homicide dicks show up. Phelps searches the pockets of the deceased, but only finds a layaway ticket from a jewelry store for a pair of pearl earrings with the name "C. Galletta" on it. While setting up the perimeter, Dunn finds a gun in a garbage ca and calls over Phelps to collect it. Dunn mentions there's a gun store just a couple blocks away, so they could check out to see if they can identify the owner.
Phelps heads into the shoe store where he finds Clovis Galletta (Rosabell Laurenti Sellers) crying. Phelps asks her is she knows the victim, and she tells him that it is her boss, Everett Gage. He asks her to give him a breakdown of the events that led to the death of Mr. Gage. She says that she was a in a store on her lunch break, when Mr. Gage stormed in yelling that she was late getting back. They then walked back when she heard the gunshots and turned around, only to see Mr. Gage fall to the ground. Not fully believing her story, Phelps asks her about the pearl earrings and what happened at the jewelry store. Clovis breaks down, worried that she'll lose the earrings she's been paying for for a year. Phelps says she should be more worried about losing her freedom and asks for the real story. She tells him that the owner of the jewelry store, Edgar Kalou, was showing her a watch when Gage burst in, telling her to get back to work. Kalou then began yelling at Gage. They then left and he was shot in the back when they were returning. Phelps asks who shot Gage, and she tells him it was Edgar Kalou. Phelps asks why, and she tells him that Gage hated Jews. A squad car of uniformed officers arrives on the scene. Dunn tells them to maintain the perimeter while they head to the jewelry store to seek out a lead.
Phelps and Dunn arrive at the jewelry store and are greeted by a man behind the counter (Elon Gold) who offers them a good price on a watch. Phelps asks if he is Edgar Kalou, but the man says he isn't, but that Mr. Kalou is out back lying down. The man offers to go and get him. Once the man gets to the back door, he starts running. Phelps hops over the counter and gives chase. Phelps chases him through the back alley, across the street, and into a park. Phelps fires a warning shot into the air and tells Kalou the next one will be aimed at the back of his head if he keeps running. Kalou stops running and puts his hands in the air. Phelps formally places Edgar Kalou under arrest for the murder of Everett Gage and has him taken to the nearby Wilshire Police Station.
Phelps heads over to the Wilshire Station to fill out some paperwork pertaining to the arrest and is greeted by Captain James Donnelly (Brian F. O'Byrne). Donnelly commends Phelps on showing the initiative to track down the killer himself rather than rest on his laurels. Donnelly then offers Phelps the opportunity to conduct the interview with Edgar Kalou. Donnelly tells Phelps that the goal is to find motive, opportunity, hard evidence and or a confession. If he fails in the former, he can always use a modicum of force to obtain the latter. Donnelly says that in this case, the evidence is overwhelming, but a confession would make everyone's life easier, and would be an excellent way to show that he has the chops to be a detective. Phelps nods and heads into the interview room.
When Phelps enters the room, Kalou demands to see his lawyer. Phelps tells him that a lawyer isn't going to help him now - he shot a man dead in cold blood. Phelps tells Kalou that he witnesses that can testify that Kalou followed Gage and the girl back to the shoe store and shot Gage in the back. Kalou says Gage was a bastard, but claims he had nothing to do with the shooting. Phelps tells him that Miss Galletta has already made a statement, placing Kalou at the scene of the crime. Kalou loses his temper and begins yelling at Phelps about how Gage has been trying to ruin his jewelry business for years just because he's a Jew and Gage hated Jews. Kalou says he's glad he killed Gage, the Jew hating bastard. Phelps stands up and calmly informs Kalou that he is being charged with the first degree murder of Everett Gage.
Phelps leaves the interview room. In the hallway, Captain Donnelly pats Phelps on the back and says he's going to have a word with the Chief of Police about Phelps, since man with such an unwavering sense of justice should not merely have the word "officer" in front of his name. Phelps thanks Donnelly and begins to walk away when Donnelly stops him. Donnelly offers him a piece of advice: get two suits and have them pressed - Phelps will be needing them. When Phelps returns home that night, his wife Marie (Katie Findlay) asks him how work was. Phelps smiles and says he thinks he just got promoted.

Cole Hauser .... Detective Roy Earle
Bob Stephenson .... Watch Commander Mel Fleischer
Michael Mosley .... Officer Ralph Dunn
Jordan Gelber .... Malcolm Carruthers

Plot: 1947 - Cole Phelps (Joe Alwyn) arrives at the Central Police Station in a new, pressed suit for his first day as a detective. He is greeted by the precinct's Watch Commander Mel Fleischer (Bob Stephenson), who happily begins giving Phelps a tour of the station. Fleischer takes him through to the building to his desk in the Traffic Division. On the way hangs a large poster of the Master Plan of Metropolitan Los Angeles Freeways. Phelps comments that he wishes they'd build a freeway next to his house. Fleischer says that they haven't even approved the money for the freeway yet and that the bond measure won't be till December - it will be years before any of it actually comes about. Fleischer then introduces Phelps to his new partner Detective Stefan Bekowsky (Eric Ladin), who says as long as Phelps goes easy on his and lets him earn the odd citation, they'll get along fine. Detective Roy Earle (Cole Hauser) comes through the office and introduces himself to Phelps. Earle says he'll have to keep an eye on Phelps based on what he's heard. Earle then walks away. Fleischer tells Phelps that Earle is the chief Ad Vice detective.
Phelps follows Bekowsky into the briefing room where he is welcomed by the sardonic Captain Gordon Leary (Bill Burr), who informs the rest of the room that Phelps is one of only two serving LAPD officers who received the Silver Star during the war. Leary tells Phelps to stick with Bekowsky - he's a good cop and he knows Traffic inside and out. Leary says he'll give him one case. If he does well he'll get a couple more. If Phelps screws up, Leary says he will have him rousting vagrants and runnin license plates. Leary tells Phelps and Bekowsky to get down to the PE Freight Depot. A patrolman called in a suspicious vehicle with signs of foul play.
When they arrive at the depot, the Officer Ralph Dunn (Michael Mosley) is on the scene. He informs them that the car is registered to an Adrian Black and is full of blood, but not body. Phelps heads over to the car where he finds County Coroner Malcolm Carruters (Jordan Gelber) taking a look at the copious amounts of blood in the car. Phelps looks through a wallet found in the car. It belongs to Adrian Black. Near the car there is a bloody pipe, but Carruthers comments that there seems to be too much blood to have been caused by any sort of blunt force trauma. Bekowsky opens up the trunk of the car and calls Phelps over. Bekowsky found a receipt in the trunk made out to "F. Morgan" for the purchase of one live hog.
Phelps and Bekowsky drive to Adrian Black's house to speak to his wife. When they walk up to the door, Bekowsky tells Phelps to go ahead and do the talking. Bekowsky says he's no good at the shoulder to cry on stuff. They knock on the door and Margaret Black (Keegan Connor Tracy) answers. Phelps tells her they have some bad news for her and ask to come inside. Once inside, Phelps informs her that Adrian's car was found abandoned and there are signs of foul play. She says she was worried when he didn't come home last night. Phelps asks Margaret if it would be alright if he and his partner had a look around the house for a few minutes. Margaret says that would be fine, anything to help find her husband. Near an ashtray Phelps finds a matchbook from Cavanagh's Bar. Bekowsky surmises that Adrian could have been a regular if he's bringing home matchbooks. In a closet Phelps finds a used train ticket to Seattle, but doesn't find a suitcase, which he finds suspicious. Phelps and Bekowsky sit back down with Margaret and ask her if she knows a "F. Morgan". She says that would be Frank Morgan, Adrian's up to no good drinking buddy. Bekowsky asks if Adrian frequents Cavanagh's Bar, and she says that he practically lives there after work. Phelps asks if Adrian said where he was going the night before, and she says that all he said was that he was going out for a drink with Frank. Phelps tells Margaret that they'll keep her informed on the case and thank her for her time and assistance. As Phelps and Bekowsky get into the car to check out the bar, Bekowsky says he doesn't think Margaret was involved in whatever happened. She just doesn't seem the type. Phelps agrees with him.
Phelps and Bekowsky arrive at Cavanagh's Bar. They asks the bartender for Frank Morgan. The bartender points to the corner of the room. They sit down at the table in front of Frank Morgan (Mark Pellegrino). Phelps asks him if he'd heard that Adrian has gone missing. Morgan says that's too bad - Adrian was a good boss. Phelps tells him that they found Adrian's car abandoned, covered in blood, and they believe Morgan was involved. Morgan laughs and tells them to prove it. Phelps mentions that they have a receipt in the trunk with his name on it. Morgan gives up and tells the detectives that Adrian fell in love with some broad in Seattle and asked for Morgan's help to make it look like he'd been attacked. Bekowsky thanks Morgan for his cooperation and asks where Adrian Black is hiding out. At first Morgan claims Adrian took off for Seattle, but quickly reveals that Adrian is hiding out at his place until he gets some money together.
Phelps and Bekowsky knock on Morgan's door, and Adrian Black (Joshua Leonard) answers. Phelps greets Black and tells him he's under arrest. Adrian apologizes, saying he never wanted to hurt anyone, he just needed to get away from L.A. Adrian tries to escape out a window, but falls and lands in a bush down below. Bekowsky and Phelps run outside and find him still struggling to get out of the bush that broke his fall. Phelps cuffs Adrian, telling him he is under arrest for conspiracy and fraud. Bekowsky says that Adrian is going to lose his wife, his job and probably end up in the big house. He says he hopes the dame in Seattle was worth all that.
Back at the Central station, Captain Leary comments on what an idiot Adrian Black was, but commends Phelps for getting an arrest and a clearance in his first case in the division.

He tells Cole Phelps (Joe Alwyn) and Stefan Bekowsky (Eric Ladin) that they got a report of a brand new Packard abandoned in an empty lot. A man called and says it was dumped in his backyard. There's a patrolman on site, so Leary tells them to get down there promtpy and see what they can turn up. As they head to the car, Bekowsky sarcastically that they always get the exciting cases like abandoned cars. Phelps says that nobody just abandons a brand new car unless it was taken without permission.
Meanwhile, Dr. Harlan Fontaine (Frederick Weller) speaks to Courtney Sheldon's friend from the war, Ira Hogeboom (Chris Zylka). The man enters the office and Fontaine tells him to go ahead and lie down on the couch and make himself comfortable. Fontaine mentions that Courtney seems very concerned about him. The man tells Fontaine that he has blinding visions that he can't get out of his head. His skull feels like it's in a vice. Fontaine gives him an injection in his arm, saying it will calm his nerves. Fontaine then says that he wants to take the man on a journey, a journey back in time. He wants the man to remember the good things about his past, occasions that made him laugh, and times that made him smile.
When Phelps and Bekowsky arrive at the crime scene, they find the car in a large, grassy alley way behind a row of houses. They see Oswald Jacobs (Ned Bellamy) sitting on his back porch watching everything. Phelps and Bekowsky take a look at the car. It's missing its plates and a couple of its wheels. Inside they find the registration, listing the vehicle as registered to the Consulate General of Argentina. Bekowsky is shocked that the car is owned by the Argentinian Embassy and acknowledges that maybe the case will be interesting after all. Near the car Phelps finds a combination wrench imprinted with "Property of Dewey Bros". Bekowsky says it must belong to the Dewey Bros Packard Dealership. They then walk over to Oswald Jacobs and ask him what he knows. Jacobs says he was looking out his window last night and saw three Mexican men removing the wheels from the car. They were using the lights from a bright red Ford to illuminate what they were doing. Jacobs says he yelled that he was calling the cops to them and the ran into the Ford and sped off. Jacobs tells them that he took a look at the car after they left and found a notebook in the glove compartment. The notebook as the name Juan Francisco Valdez printed on the front. Phelps thumbs through the book and finds it is a list of male names with descriptions next to them. On its own page is the name William Dewey and a phone number Phelps calls the station to check in and the watch commander, Mel Fleischer (Bob Stephenson), tells him that a four door Packard with diplomatic plates was reported missing this morning by a Juan Francisco Valdez. Fleischer tells Phelps that Valdez is already at the station, demanding an audience. Phelps asks Fleischer to tell Captain Leary that they'll be in as soon as they can.
Bekowsky says they should check out the dealership before heading back to the station to talk to Valdez. Phelps says that's fine by him and they start driving there. On the drive Bekowsky complains that this must be the 50th abandoned vehicle call they've caught that year. One more and he's going to go crazy. Of all the bad guys in Los Angeles, they get lumped with the ones who can't even be bothered to keep what they steal. When they arrive at the Dewey Bros. dealership, William Dewey (Lance Barber) comes out of the office to greet them, assuming they are there to buy a new car. Phelps doesn't go for his sales pitch and tells Dewey they're from the LAPD and have some questions for him. Bekowsky tells him they're investigating the theft of a Packard belonging to the Argentine Embassy and asks Dewey if he's missing any combination wrenches. Dewey says he isn't sure, but knows how he can find out and brings them over to the garage where they keep all the tools. They find that the tool shelf belonging to a Gabriel Del Gado is missing a wrench the same size as the one found at the crime scene. Phelps then asks Dewey how he knows Valdez, Dewey says he doesn't, that the embassy bought the car. Phelps mentions Dewey's name in Valdez's notebook. Dewey relents and says that he met Valdez in a bar, they cut a deal and Valdez bought the car through the Embassy. Phelps then asks Dewey where they can find Gabriel Del Gado. Dewey tells them he isn't at work that day, but offers his address. Phelps and Bekowsky thank Dewey from his help and leave the dealership.
Bekowsky reminds Phelps that Valdez is waiting at the station, so they head there next. At the station, Fleischer tells them that Valdez is waiting for them in an interview room. When they head in, they find Juan Francisco Valdez (David Zayas) waiting impatiently. He quickly complains about how long he's been waiting. Bekowsky tells him to calm down and answer their questions. Phelps asks Valdez where he purchased the casr. Valdez says his secretary purchased the car from a place called Dewey Brothers. Phelps, already frustrated with Valdez's sense of entitlement, demands to know why he was driving around a Packard or he'll start using force to figure out what's going on. Valdez says Dewey offered him a bribe to make a purchase at his establishment. Bekowsky tells Valdez that the car has been located and that he thinks Valdez knows who stole the car. Valdez says a young man named Gabriel who works at the dealership probably stole it. Phelps asks Valdez if he has sex with boys. Bekowsky is surprised by the question, and Valdez erupts with anger at such a question. Phelps then explains for Valdez, and his befuddled partner, that the names in Valdez's notebook are those of young men. Valdez says that he asked Gabriel Del Gado if he wanted to have a rendezvous with him, and the young man went mad. Phelps and Bekowsky leave the interview room and leave the station to head to Gabriel Del Gado's address.
Phelps and Bekowsky knock on Del Gado's door and are greeted by the pregnant Anna Rodriguez (Camila Mendes). She insists that Gabriel isn't there, but Bekowsky insists that they have a look around. He tells Phelps to look around while he speaks with Anna. In a shed Phelps finds the stolen wheels and diplomatic plates. He heads back inside and asks Anna why Gabriel stole the car. She says that Gabriel told her that the customer had insulted him, so he was just getting some payback. Phelps asks Anna to tell him where Gabriel is or he'll have her and her unborn baby arrested. She says that he is out at a street race and gives them the location of the starting line.
When they get to the location they find the cars just starting the race. Phelps and Bekowsky give chase, sticking with Gabriel's red Ford. They chase Gabriel's car onto the Los Angeles River culvert. Phelps eventually to make Gabriel crash his car. Gabriel Del Gado (Andrew Jacobs) tries running from his crashed vehicle, but is quickly apprehended by Bekowsky. Later, Captain Gordon Leary meets them at the scene of the crash. He tells Phelps and Bekowsky they've sure done a number one this one. They outed a foreign dignitary as a fruit and a pedophile, and stopped a street punk car thief. Leary says that's not a bad haul for a day of work. It was text book policing that they need more of in the LAPD.

Plot: 1947 - Captain Gordon Leary (Bill Burr) tracks down Cole Phelps (Joe Alwyn) and his partner Stefan Bekowsky (Eric Ladin) while they are at their desks at the Central precinct. He tells them to head over to Ray's Cafe where there has been a report of a felony hit and run. The victim is deceased and the coroner is already on his way. Bekowsky is excited that it isn't another abandoned vehicle and volunteers to drive to the scene. When they arrive at Ray's Cafe, they find the coroner Malcolm Carruthers (Jordan Gelber) inspecting the body of the victim, Lester Pattison, in the street in front of the bar. An officer on the scene says that there is just one eye witness, an aspiring actress named Shannon Perry. Carruthers tells Phelps and Bekowsky that based on the wounds on the body and how the body landed on the street, the car would have struck the victim from behind. Phelps looks at the victim's wallet to get the address of the victim. In a garbage can outside of the bar, Phelps finds a bloody kitchen knife. Bekowsky says anyone could have thrown it out and that they're investigating a hit and run, not a stabbing.
Phelps and Bekowsky introduce themselves to Shannon Perry (Isabelle Cornish) and ask her what she saw. She tells them that she lives in an apartment above the bar. She heard people arguing, then saw Pattison stumble into the street where he was hit by a dark red Lincoln Continental. She tells them she saw the first three letters of the license plate: 3C8. Bekowsky asks about the argument she heard, and she says that it was a man and woman and seemed like husband and wife, but that's about it. Next, Phelps heads inside to talk to the bartender while Bekowsky hits up the regular patrons for information.
Courtney Sheldon (Daniel Webber) meets with Dr. Harlan Fontaine (Frederick Weller) at his home office. Fontaine invites Sheldon to have a seat and asks him how he's liking working at his clinic so far. Sheldon says it's fine, but Fontaine is skeptical of Sheldon's response and asks him to elaborate. Sheldon says that he was hoping the therapy would be more beneficial. Fontaine explains that treatment can unfortunately be a very long term process. Sheldon tells Fontaine that he finds it odd that so many of the patients at the clinic are drug addicts and are still using their drugs of choice. Fontaine says that in the past these people would have been condemned to sanatoriums, but if they can reveal the root of the problem then they can have a chance to help them. Sheldon apologizes to Fontaine, but says that he just expected more. Sheldon asks how the patients can still be using illegal drugs while in therapy. Fontaine tells him that what may on the surface appear to be illegal is actually of benefit to society at large.
Phelps asks the bartender, Dudley Lynch (Chris Sullivan), what he knows about the accident. Lynch says that the bar was busy at the time, so all he heard was the impact. Phelps asks him what Lester Pattison was doing outside, and Lynch says that he and his wife Lorna were having a fight, so the owner told them to take it outside. Lynch says that Lester was a regular at the bar, and that the owner, Leroy Sabo, took Lorna home. Phelps meets up with Bekowsky outside, and Bekowsky says he didn't learn much other than that the Pattisons fought regularly at the bar. Phelps walks over to a payphone and calls the precinct asking them to run the partial license plate Ms. Perry remembered. There is a Lincoln registered to a William Shelton matching the partial plate. Bekowsky says it looks like they might have caught a break on the case.
When they pull up outside Shelton's apartment they decide to wait outside across the street from the car and wait for someone. After a while they finally see William Shelton (Frank Whaley), suitcases in hand, start loading up his car to make a getaway. Phelps and Bekowsky walk over to him and say that making a run for it isn't going to look good for the jury. Shelton throws a suitcase at the detectives and attempts to speed off in his car, but the car is having trouble starting. Bekowsky starts laughing as Phelps pulls his gun and orders Shelton out of the car with his hands in the air. Shelton says the accident wasn't his fault. The guy jumped right in front of his car and there was nothing he could do about it. Phelps asks him why he didn't stop, and Shelton says he has had accidents before. Phelps asks Bekowsky to cuff Shelton. As Bekowsky is loading Shelton into the car, Shelton says that there were a man and a woman right next to the man he hit and he thought they could get him to a hospital.
After taking Shelton in to the station, Bekowsky says they should probably go check in with the victim's wife. They drive to her house and knock at the door. Lorna Pattison (Amber Valletta) answers and invites them in. Phelps asks her what happened, and Lorna calmly says that her husband was hit by a car and now he's dead, there's not much to it. Phelps and Bekowsky are befuddled by her lack of emotion regarding the accident. Leroy Sabo (Josh Stewart) then enters the room and introduces himself to the detectives. He says that Lester lost at cards and then lost his temper at the bar. He told Lester to leave the bar to cool off. Lester then turned without looking and walked right out in front of the car. Phelps asks Leroy what his relationship with Lorna is, and Leroy tells him that they're good friends. Lorna interrupts to say that she was filing for divorce from Lester. He could be a mean son of a bitch. Bekowsky says that it sure has worked out conveniently for Leroy and Lorna. They can now be together without the difficulty her getting a divorce. Phelps asks Lorna how the car came to hit Lester, and she says that it happened how Leroy said it happened. Lester was yelling and walked right into the path of the car. She says she feels sorry for the driver since he had no chance to evade Lester. Phelps and Bekowsky tell Leroy and Lorna to have a nice day and leave the house.
Bekowsky and Phelps drive to the morgue to take a look at the body. When they arrive Phelps says based on the evidence so far they can probably get the driver of the car in front of a judge by the end of the week. The coroner Malcolm Carruthers says that would be a mistake. Phelps and Bekowsky look at each other confused, and Carruthers tells them that Lester Pattison was already dead when the car hit him. He had been stabbed multiple times in the chest. Phelps says they found a knife in the alleyway next to the crime scene. Carruthers asks if it was bagged, and Phelps says they had a patrolman bag it so it should be in evidence right now. Carruthers says he'll be able to get them a match on the knife. Bekowsky comments that their hit and run case has suddenly become a homicide case. They race back to Lorna Pattison's residence.
They knock at the door and when she answers they tell her she needs to come downtown to answer some questions. Lorna tells them that it wasn't her idea and that Leroy is the one who stabbed Lester. Bekowsky asks where Leroy is, and she says he's in the bedroom. Leroy then emerges with a gun. He starts yelling at Lorna for turning on him and lying to the cops. He yells that it was all her idea to kill Lester to collect the life insurance. Lorna begs the detectives to shoot Leroy, calling him crazy. Leroy then shoots Lorna and runs out the back of the house. Phelps chases after Leroy into the street where Leroy grabs a young woman as a hostage. Phelps carefully steadies his aim and shoots Leroy Sabo in the head. Bekowsky catches up with Phelps and says that Phelps is doing the paper work on this one. They head back to Ray's Cafe where Captain Leary is waiting for them. He says he sent them on a hit and run, but came back with first degree murder. He tells them to keep up the good work and pours them beers from the bar.

Plot: 1967 - Cole Phelps (Joe Alwyn) and Stefan Bekowski (Eric Ladin) are informed by Watch Commander Mel Fleischer (Bob Stephenson) that a car from the hot sheet of stolen vehicles has turned up and are told to get over to the scene. When Phelps and Bekowski pull up at the house the car was seen in front of, the car, a green Kaiser Frazer, speeds off. Bekowsky tells Phelps to step on it, and they give chase. While Phelps drives, Bekowsky calls for backup over the radio. Phelps manages to bump into the car, causing it to fishtail to a stop. Phelps and Bekowsky get out and surround the car and order the driver out. The driver, Cliff Harrison (Casey Cott), gets out of the car with his hands in the air. They tell Harrison he's under arrest, but Harrison insists he bought the car and has the paper work to prove it. Harrison shows them a receipt he has from Coombs Automotive Company. He then shows them the vehicle registration. Phelps and Bekowsy look it over and both agree that it is a forgery, but a damn good one. Bekowsky asks Harrison why he tried to run from them if he didn't steal the car. Harrison admits that he has some marijuana in the glove compartment. Phelps asks who Harrison dealt with at Coombs Automotive, and Harrison says he dealt directly with the owner Richard Coombs and suggests the cops talk to him. Phelps and Bekowsky place Harrison under arrest. Harrison is furious that he's being busted for simply buying a car, and Bekowsky advises him to shut up. If everything turns out how Harrison said, he'll be fine.
Phelps and Bekowsky arrive at Coombs Automotive they are greeted by the owner Richard Coombs (Joel Murray). Phelps tells Coombs that they are investigating an auto theft and the suspect, Cliff Harrison, claims he bought the car from Coombs. Coombs makes a joke about his cars being a steal and offers to show the detective the bill of sale and the original pink slip. Coombs shows them the original pink slip which lists a Jean Archer as the original owner of the car. After seeing those, Phelps tells Coombs that they have a few questions for him. Phelps asks Coombs how he came about getting the car on the lot, and Coombs tells him that a young lady brought it in. She didn't seem super sharp, but she wasn't asking a lot for the car. Coombs says that she wanted to get paid in cash, but that he insisted on cutting her a check.
Bekowsky suggests they head to the address listed for Archer on the original vehicle registration since it's not too far away to check it out. Once they get there, however, they find the address is an empty lot. On the drive to the station, Bekowksy asks Phelps if he thinks there is something about selling cars that attracts assholes, or if he thinks selling cars turns people into assholes. Phelps laughs, but Bekowsky says it was a serious question. They arrive at the Central Precinct where Fleischer tells them that they have a man who may be connected to the case waiting in an interview room for them to talk to - another stolen car with legit papers. They enter the interview room where they find James Belasco (Jeremy Jordan) waiting. He quickly shows them his vehicle registration. Phelps tells him that the pink slip is a forgery. Phelps asks Belasco where he was taking the car, and Belasco says he wants a deal. Bekowsky tells him to start talking and they'll see what they can do. Belasco tells them that his job is to bring the cars out of state, usually to Nevada or Arizona. Phelps asks Belasco if the name Jean Archer sounds familiar, and he says no. Phelps says he doesn't believe him, and Phelps proposes the idea that she is a mule for the stolen vehicles. Belasco then admits that he knows her and calls her stupid. Phelps asks Belasco what happens after he delivers the cars, and he says that the cars get sold in Chicago or out east and that sometimes he brings back cars coming the other way. Phelps asks where he picks up the cars, and Belasco gives them the address of a warehouse in East Los Angeles.
Phelps and Bekowsky leave the interview room and are met by one of the technical services officers who tells them that the pink slips are all real and he spoke with someone at the company that prints all the registration slips for the state. He gives them the name of the person he talked to: Gordon Leitvol, the owner of the printing company. Fleischer rushes up to Phelps and Bekowsky and tells them that Jean Archer has been spotted at a Western Union office down the street. Phelps and Bekowsky arrive at the Western Union office and find a young woman, Jean Archer (Shannon Woodward), arguing with the teller. Phelps asks her to calm down and answer their questions. Phelps tells her that the car she sold to Coombs Automotive was stolen, and she insists that she handed over all the correct paperwork when she sold the car. Phelps tells Archer that she has blown open the whole operation because she was stupid enough to try to sell one of the cars. Bekowsky demands Archer tell them where she picked up the car. She says she picks up the cars from a guy named Bigelow from some warehouse.
Bekowsky and Phelps drive over to the printing company, Marquee Printing and ask to talk to the owner. Gordon Leitvol (David Warhofsky) comes out of his office and greets the detectives. Phelps says he understands that Marquee prints vehicle registration slips, and Leitvol confirms that his company has the government contract to print pink slips and have for several years. Phelps asks Leitvol if he's had any equipment stolen recently since they're working a case that involves stolen vehicles with seemingly legitimate paperwork. Leitvol says nothing has gone missing recently and asks if the detectives have ruled out forgery since there are no shortage of talented artists in this town. Phelps asks if Leitvol knows anything about a car theft ring, and Leitvol says he would never get caught up in anything like that. Phelps tells him that two car theft cases have paperwork that was printed by Marquee Printing and says that Leitvol better give him some information before he brings the whole department down there. Leitvol nervously says that they had a similar problem a couple years ago where a number of used car lots were selling blank documents to a criminal organization. Leitvol says that the name Coombs sounds familiar and suggests they may have been involved in stolen documents in the past. Phelps asks to look through the company's ledger. Leitvol is apprehensive, but eventually agrees to show the book to Phelps, who looks through it and notices the name Bigelow.
Phelps and Bekowsky leave the building and decide to head over to the warehouse address given by Belasco. When they get there, Phelps suggests they call in for backup, but Bekowsky says they both have guns and know how to use them, so they can handle it. He tells Phelps to go through the front while he goes through the back entrance of the warehouse. Phelps takes cover in the front entrance and announces himself and tells them to stand down. The men inside the warehouse open fire on Phelps. He trades fire with a few men, while Bekowsky sneaks up from behind and shoots them. Phelps and Bekowsky work together to clear the warehouse. They shoot their way through the building until they finally make it to an office where they find a man, Steven Bigelow (Casey Siemaszko), holding his hands in the air. Bekowsky holds Bigelow at gunpoint while Phelps searches the office. He finds a box of blank registration pink slips. After Phelps finds another box of blank slips with Leitvol's signature on it, Bigelow tells them that he isn't talking without his lawyer present. When they place him under arrest, Bigelow starts talking about how Leitvol has bad luck at the track so he's working the car racket to get out of debt.
Phelps and Bekowsky head back over to Marquee Printing and place Leitvol under arrest. Leitvol says they have nothing on him, but Phelps says they have plenty of evidence to arrest him for conspiracy and fraud. In the morning, Captain Gordon Leary (Bill Burr) reads aloud from the newspaper during the morning briefing: "The LAPD's Central Traffic division has smashed a nationwide auto theft ring..... Traffic squad detectives confronted a large group of armed thugs..... After an exchange of gunfre, more than half a dozen dead criminals were removed from the scene..... The LAPD sustained no casualties." Leary pats Phelps and Bekowsky on the back and commends them on the damn fine detective work. He then tells them to get back out there and catch some more bad guys because they're making him look really good lately.

Plot: 1945 - Cole Phelps (Joe Alwyn) and Hank Merrill (Gabriel Basso) stand on the deck of the ship taking them to the Pacific as it is getting ready to hit the open ocean. Phelps tells Merrill about how his family runs a shipping business in San Francisco and used to have two ships a week going to Tokyo. The family has been in shipping for two generations, yet he has never been on a voyage anywhere. Phelps then goes on to say that American can rule the world after they win the war. Merrill says that they should worry more about staying alive than world domination.
1947 - At the Central Station, Captain Gordon Leary (Bill Burr) goes over the morning briefing and tells Phelps and Stefan Bekowsky (Eric Ladin) that they have a new case. Two women were involved in a possible drink and drive incident. Bekowsky asks how that is a traffic case, and Leary tells him that the woman behind the wheel says she was doped and that somebody tried to kill her. Phelps asks where it took place, and Leary it happened right across the street. Phelps and Bekowsky head up the hill across the street where they find the car down an escarpment slammed into a Coca-Cola billboard. They spot the supposed driver, June Ballard (Carrie-Anne Moss), and Phelps says her face looks familiar. Bekowsky tells him that she used to be a famous actress who is married to Guy McAfee, a mobster out of Las Vegas. The officer on the scene tells them that Ballard says a movie producer doped her and her friend and sent the car over the cliff.
Phelps and Bekowsky head down the steep path down to the crashed car where they find Malcolm Carruthers (Jordan Gelber) already on the scene inspecting the vehicle. Carruthers shows them some evidence he's already begun collecting. There are a pair of torn off women's underwear that he found stuffed in the young lady's handbag. He'll test for traces of semen when he gets back to the lab. Carruthers then shows him a shrunken head he found in the vehicle. Not a real one, but more likely a movie prop. Bekowsky asks how the skull is relevant, and Carruthers tells him that it was wedging the accelerator to the floor. Whoever did it wanted the two women dead. Phelps and Bekowsky then walk over to speak with June Ballard who is being attended to by paramedics. Ballard asks them if they're familiar with her film work, but Phelps cuts to the chase and asks her for her story of what happened. She says he's too serious, but she likes him nonetheless. Bekowsky tries to tell her he's a big fan, but she turns away from him to talk to Phelps. She says that she was slipped a mickey and can't remember what happened. When Phelps presses her for more information, she tells Phelps not to worry about it, her husband will settle the score with Mark Bishop. Phelps asks her about the passenger in her car, and Ballard says her name is Jessica Hamilton and she is desperate to break into the movie business. Phelps tells Ballard that he thinks she knows what happened to Hamilton the night before the crash. Ballard asks him if he has any proof, and Phelps asks her about the underwear. Ballard says Hamilton wanted to go to a casting, so she took her to a casting. Whatever happened after that is between her and Mark Bishop. Phelps asks who this Mark Bishop she keeps mentioning is, and she says he is a movie producer. As for his involvement, Ballard says the police should leave that up to her and her husband to worry about. Bekowsky interrupts and asks why Bishop would want to commit a double murder, and Ballard says that Bishop offered her a part in his latest picture, then he withdrew it despite their deal and she confronted him on the issue.
Phelps and Bekowsky head over to the receiving hospital to speak to Jessica Hamilton (Meg Donnelly). When they get there the doctor on duty tells them that she was drugged and raped. Bekowsky is befuddled that someone would try to use a double murder to cover up a rape and get on the wrong side of a gangster like McAfee in the process. Phelps asks Hamilton what she remembers about the crash, but she says she doesn't remember much. She tells them that she told her aunt June Ballard about what Mark Bishop did to her, and Ballard told her that is just the price of stardom. Phelps asks how Hamilton met Bishop, and she says that Ballard introduced them. Phelps asks where Bishop abused her, and she says there was a mermaid on the front of the building, but doesn't remember much else.
On their way out of the receiving hospital, they see Ballard leaving with who appears to be her lawyer. Phelps and Bekowsky decide to tail her in an unmarked car. They carefully follow her to a cafe and see her make a phone call at a pay phone. Phelps sits at a booth an eavesdrops on Ballard's call to her husband. She is telling him to take care of Bishop, telling him Bishop's address. Ballard then leaves the cafe. Phelps leaves the diner and tells Bekowsky to drive to Bishop's address. Phelps says that if Bishop has any sense he'll be long gone by the time they get there. Bekowsky says that if Bishop had any sense he wouldn't have tried to snuff out McAfee's wife, or he would have at least done the job properly. When they reach Bishop's apartment, they speak to Bishop's wife, Gloria Bishop (Alexandra Breckenridge), and ask if they can have a look around. She doesn't see any problem with this and shows them around the apartment that is filled with movie memorabilia. Phelps asks Gloria if the name June Ballard means anything to her, and Gloria says that the old bag has been badgering her husband for days now. Phelps tells Gloria that Ballard alleges that Bishop tried to kill her. Gloria says that doesn't know anything about her husband's business dealings. Bekowsky asks her where her husband is, but she is under the assumption that he's on set of his latest movie, but that if he's trying to hide out, that his best friend Marlon Hopgood, owner of the Silver Screen Prop Store, would know where he is.
When Phelps and Bekowsky arrive at the Silver Screen Prop Store, they find that the front of the shop features a large mermaid sign. They enter the store and announce to the owner Marlon Hopgood (John Ventimiglia) that they are investigating the attempted murder of June Ballard and Jessica Hamilton. Hopgood asks them how he can help them. Phelps asks if he holds castings in the building, and Hopgood tells the detectives that he has a sound stage in the back. Phelps tells him to lead the way. Hopgood takes them to the back of the shop to the sound stage. Phelps looks around and notices that Hopgood has a one way mirror with a camera on the other side. He keeps looking and finds the drug that was used to knock out both Ballard and Hamilton, as well as shrunken head identical to the one found in Ballard's car. Phelps confronts Hopgood with the bounty of evidence he's uncovered on the property. Hopgood tells Phelps and Bekowsky to come back with a warrant. Phelps says that a 15 year old girl told him how she was drugged and molested at a casting and he found the drug. If Hopgood doesn't start talking, Phelps swears that he will break his jaw. Hopgood says that Bishop was there with June Ballard and the girl. Phelps tells Hopgood that Guy McAfee's men are going to be after Bishop and it's important they get to him before McAfee's men can. Hopgood says that Bishop might be hiding out on an old film set on 8th Street.

Plot: 1947 - Gangster Mickey Cohen (Vincent Piazza) is sitting at his usual prime table at the Mocambo night club with his right-hand man Johnny Stompanato (Matthew Daddario) when Courtney Sheldon (Daniel Webber) enters the club and is escorted to Cohen's table by the maitre d. Stompanato tells Sheldon to sit down and introduces him to the infamous Mickey Cohen. Cohen asks if Sheldon wants to be a doctor or a dope peddler, commenting that it's an interesting combination. Sheldon asks if there is a problem, and Cohen says there might just be. Cohen says that selling dope to his boy Lenny might have looked like a good move, but the junkies in this town aren't used to strong stuff. Sheldon asks why that's his problem. Cohen tells him that the only way their arrangement is going to work is to do some repackaging so that they can water it down a bit so they don't kill too many of their customers. Sheldon tells Cohen that he can't just water down dope, it doesn't work chemically. Cohen then offers to buy out Sheldon's supply for $50,000. Sheldon then gets up from the table and walks out of the club. Cohen picks up a phone tells the person on the other line that he thinks he wants Courtney Sheldon dead.
Cole Phelps (Joe Alwyn) and Stefan Bekowsky (Eric Ladin) are about to arrest Marlon Hopgood (John Ventimiglia) at the Silver Screen Prop Store and take him into the station when Detective Roy Earle (Cole Hauser) arrives and tells them that clearly the it is a Vice case, not a traffic case. Earle says that Hopgood is an informant for the Vice squad. Phelps is shocked that Hopgood is a Vice informant and asks if Earle expects them to just drop all the charges they have against Hopgood. Earle says yes, they should leave Hopgood alone if they know what's good for them. Earle says that from what he hears, Phelps and Bekowsky should be off trying to find a scumbag movie producer before a certain Las Vegas gangster gets to him. Phelps tells Earle that he will be making a full report to the Captain when about this when he gets back to the station. Earle laughs, and tells Phelps that everyone is very impressed with him. Phelps takes a step toward Earle, but Bekowsky pulls him away, saying they have other things they should be doing right now.
When Phelps and Bekowsky make their way outside, they find a couple of Guy McAfee's thugs waiting outside the prop shop. They urge the detectives to tell them if they find Mark Bishop as Mr. McAfee can be a very generous man. Phelps gets in their faces and tells them that it is a police matter and that they need to stay out of it. Bekowsky tells the thugs that the only reason they aren't already behind bars is because they are small fry, and tells them to stay away from Bishop and stay away from them. The thugs then get back into their car and drive away. With that out of the way, Phelps and Bekowsky drive to the old film set to DW Griffith's Intolerance that Hopgood told them Bishop might be hiding out at.
They arrive at the giant abandoned set from the film Intolerance, which is a large reconstruction of ancient Babylon. Bekowsky comments that of course Bishop has to be hiding at the biggest damn set in town. As they look around, they see Mark Bishop (John Hannah). When Bishop sees them he takes off into the confines of the massive open air set. Phelps starts chasing after him. Bekowsky says he'll call it in. Phelps chases Bishop all the way to the top of the giant ancient wooden wall built for the set until he finally has Bishop pinned at a dead end. From the top of the set, Phelps and Bishop see that Guy AcAfee's men have arrived as well. Phelps tells Bishop to stay close to him and stay low. Phelps sees Bekowsky pinned down behind their police cruiser and comments to Bishop that backup should be on their way soon. Police sirens can be heard in the distance, so Phelps and Bishop take cover behind a statue. As the police cars screech to a stop in front of the set, McAfee's men flee the scene.
Phelps and Bekowsky load Bishop into a paddy wagon. Captain Gordon Leary (Bill Burr) arrives on the scene and tells Phelps that because he's already developed such a reputation around the station that Phelps is getting a promotion. Phelps shakes hands with Bekowsky and Leary and they congratulate him. Roy Earle pulls up in his car at the crime scene and announces that he's there to buy Phelps and Bekowsky a drink. Earle takes them to The Blue Room Jazz Club. Earle tells them they'll love it since a lot of movie people hang out there. When they walk in, the doorman knows Earle by name and asks if they want a table. Earle asks if Elsa is scheduled to sing, and he is told that she is up next. Earle tells Phelps that he'll take him to meet Elsa while they are getting a table ready. The doorman tells Earle that another night might be better since Elsa is beat up about something, but Earle snaps at the doorman, saying that nobody tells him what to do.
Elsa Lichtmann (Diane Kruger) is in her dressing room crying and talking with Dr. Harlan Fontaine (Frederick Weller). She is upset about the death of her best friend Lou Buchwalter. Earle suddenly enters the room with Phelps. He announces that he would like to introduce her to Cole Phelps, war hero and crime fighter. Elsa asks why she would ever want to meet another fascist from the LAPD. Earle slaps Elsa, calling her a German junkie whore. Fontaine goes over to Elsa and gives her an injection into her arm.
