Plot: Adam Clark (Bryan Batt) and Julia Connor (Michelle Fairley) wake up and come out of their pods. They are standing in a colorless void, with nothing around them, except their pristine white pods, property of Foy Sciences. They walk around meaninglessly, until they feel something grabbing them by the throat, it’s too much, they give up. They stumble to the ground and close their eyes.

Charles Foy (Adrian Rawlins), owner and head scientist of Foy Sciences opens up Adam and Julia’s pods and welcomes them back to reality. He figures the test went poorly, according to the results. They describe what it felt like, as if someone was trying to suffocate them. The void was empty and pitch black, when it was supposed to be full of vivid colors and a luxuriant jungle. Charles says it’s another bug in the system, they need to figure something out, or else, he’ll start to think that this cannot be achieved. Adam says their enhanced virtual reality might not work, but their subjects were able to communicate and interact together in the past, they just followed the wrong path. Foy announces they have only a week to figure it all out, or else, they will cut their funding. Adam and Julia vow to work overtime again and Charles begs for their luck as he has to go in an investor meeting and he figures things won’t go smoothly. He has nothing significant to show them.

A couple of minutes later, a lady tells Charles they are ready to see him. He looks at his watch nervously and follows her to a conference room. He plugs his USB key in the computer and thanks them for their time. He’s here to talk about the HUMAN project and how their funding is essential in its success. A man asks what exactly the HUMAN project is and how does it differentiate itself with the other artificial intelligence projects. Charles answers that the HUMAN project was created by him a year ago to create robots that can interact together and perform tasks, just like a human would. Another man notes that similar projects exist all around the world, but what Charles add is that he hopes their two prototypes can act and behave like humans do, naturally, as if you aren’t talking to a machine. Charles believes he can achieve that, but he needs their help. He introduces them to the prototypes, James (Justin Theroux) and Eva (Letitia Wright).

Adam and Julia are working on the prototypes and Adam stops dead in his tracks. He turns to Julia and he asks her if they are crazy to keep doing this. Julia says they are working for the future of all mankind, but that’s not what Adam was talking about. He says they clearly have chemistry and he could see it working between them. She cuts and she says, along with Adam that she doesn’t date co-workers. He asks her if things will be weird between them and she refuses to think so.

Charles begins his presentation of his two androids to the board. He starts a video presentation of his ambitious projects which gets the potential investors wanting more. He tells them that he unfortunately can’t satisfy them with another live presentation as they encountered problems in the development phase and that’s why he’s seeking investments to be able to complete his life project. They ask him what kind of problems they encountered and he says the void in which they perform their tests and simulations collapsed and the subjects immediately. It brings him to the next phase of his presentation; the simulation void.

Julia and Adam set aside their awkwardness towards each other and enter the void. They believe they did the right adjustments to extend their presence in the void for the presentation. Charles introduces the investors to the void and details Adam and Julia’s experiences and previous experimental work. A woman wheels a console in and he presses a button to show the void on a screen. Julia and Adam come out of their pods and are amazed to see that they can breathe. Everything seems to go right until Adam collapses due to the lack of oxygen, the same as last time. Charles struggles to turn the feed off and the investors are disgusted at the scene. Julia is able to take Adam back to his pod and press their emergency stoppage button to exit. Charles tries to salvage the situation by showing all the things he can add to the void to create various situations, ideal to transform his androids into lifelike humans. He adds a dog and a landscape to the void. With the ideal conditions, he would like the androids to live in the void while they learn, just like kids go to school. He can sense the tension in the room and some of them are uncomfortable. He ends his presentation by hoping they will still choose to invest in the HUMAN project, it will be worth it, even if it doesn’t seem like it at the moment. They ask him to wait for them outside for a moment until they make their decisions.

Julia and Adam are working on their machines, nervously awaiting the results of the investors meeting. They reworked the algorithm and they think they are fairly close to achieving their goal, after all, Julia was able to breathe for the entirety of their stint. Charles comes back and they honestly can’t tell if he’s in a good or a bad mood. He comes with mixed news. He got the grant he wanted, but they need to show results in the next month, or else they will cut the funding and they won’t be able to do anything. He hates deadline and they need results now.
Two weeks and a lot of coffee-fueled overtime later, Julia, Adam and Charles are ready to run another test. They plug the androids to the machines and turn it on. James and Eva wake up. Justin reaches over to Eva and presents himself to her. They do not seem to be grasping for air, they’ve done it!

Plot: James (Justin Theroux) and Eva (Letitia Wright), the two androids developed by our team of scientists at Foy Sciences wake up from their pod and leave. They shake hands and look around them. The void is filled with darkness with nothing to look at. They walk around nervously and start to panic when they lost sight of their pods. Charles Foy (Adrian Rawlins), overseeing the test, asks Adam (Bryan Batt) and Julia (Michelle Fairley) to disconnect James and Eva. He needs them to interact, but they seem to frightened about the world around them. They reluctantly proceed and the opening credits roll as James and Eva are grasping for air in the dark background.

Charles asks his employees if they think they can make things spawn in the void to force them to interact together. Otherwise, they won’t ever evolve to resemble real human beings. Adam says its still in the early stages and it’s unstable, but they can try to work something out. They reach over to a table with a hologram coming out of it and they design their perfect world together. Julia wants to assist and as she leaves her desk, she inadvertently presses a button, launching another experiment, just as they are building their world.

Eva reaches over to James and she holds his hand and leans towards him for protection in this unknown world. They walk around and look at the luxuriant vegetation around them. They explore the garden they appeared in and are at a lost of words. They reunite and are amazed to see a snake. James tries to tame it and Eva tells him to be careful. She’s showing signs of compassion and empathy. Adam notices James and Eva were inadvertently in the simulation and they take note of the behaviors they’re exhibiting. They become accustomed to Charles decides to switch things up a little, and swipes the simulation clean. James and Eva are freaking out and start to panic. Julia panics and disconnects the androids. They try to connect them again in the same garden, but they have to start all over again, as if they don’t remember anything. Discouraged, Charles unplugs them yet again.

Adam, Julia and Charles have a meeting about how they should make a progress. Adam thinks they should never disconnect them again and keep them in their pods when they want to change the environment. Charles says it’s worth trying, but he notes that their capacity to learn by themselves is somewhat limited. Julia points out that they have access to the void, so Adam and her can go in there to teach them, or something like that. Charles can be the architect and they can be their teachers, or guides so they can learn to act like humans. Charles likes it and they will try tomorrow. He lets Adam and Julia go, but he stays in the laboratory to work overtime. He builds out a new world for them, a city this time and he builds them a house to live in. He connects James and Eva and he turns on his recorder. Satisfied with his work, he goes back to his office, turns off the lights and sleeps on his couch.

Adam and Julia take the subway together. Adam gets closer and closer to her. Julia feels uncomfortable and she exits the subway early. Adam follows her and he asks what’s wrong. She says she doesn’t like him that way. She thinks he’s nice as a colleague and as a friend, but she’ll never feel whatever he’s feeling towards her and she’d like him to respect that. Adam says it won’t be a problem. They go their separate ways and they both go home. Before going to bed, Adam takes pills to go to sleep. Julia pets her dog and makes sure to leave it enough food before going to sleep.

Charles is looking at the androids through his computer screen and shakes his head in dissatisfaction. They just sat in their locked room all day and they seem to be in some sort of trance, he’s unable to wake them up. He watched the recording and James and Eva haven’t talked to each other all night. They just sat there and stared at the walls for hours. He looks at Julia and Adam and he makes sure they are adequately plugged in set up. They both give him a thumbs up and he sends them in the void.

Thanks to Charles instructions, Adam and Julia are able to locate the house in which James and Eva are. They interact with them to wake them up from their trance and take them by the hand and bring them outside. Adam wants to follow Julia and Eva, but Julia refuses and walks away with Eva. Adam and James are left alone in the middle of the city. James is once again in awe in front of the jungle, but a concrete jungle this time. Adam is equally unsettled. Charles created a fully functional city ran by an AI, so there are cars with no drivers. It all feels like a real city, but Adam knows it’s all fake. Adam and James talk together and get to know each other. James’ capacities are somehow limited, but he can have a fluid conversation without going into details. James really wants to go to the tallest building in town, right in the heart of the city. Adam suggests they go there and James follows.

Julia and Eva share a similar dynamic. They are both in awe in front of the city, especially Eva. Charles looks at his monitors and he witnesses a significant increase of the android’s relational competences. Eva surprises Julia with a question. She wonders where James is and she wants to see him again. Julia suggests they go to the tallest building in town =, she has a feeling they’ll want to go there to have a better view of the city. Eva follows along and they take the subway to reach their destination faster.

They go on top of the building and meet Adam and James. Eva and James stand next to each other like two kids you can’t keep away from each other. Adam and Julia aren’t comfortable next to each other. They look at the androids watching the city landscape below. With their keen eyes, they can see Charles is still building and adding things to the city far away from them. Adam looks at the androids and is envious of the complicity they share and Julia is simply impressed by the progress they have made today.

Charles keeps adding buildings and different landscape to the simulation. He can’t stop creating, he wants to build the entire world for his androids to explore, with his ultimate goal to have multiple androids learning all around his simulated world to  emulate the different culture of our world. He’s proud of the work they’ve done today. He builds and builds and builds, but like Icarus flew too close to the Sun, Charles ambition were too high for his own good and the system can’t keep up. His machine go up in flames and he takes his extinguisher to take out the fire. He tries to unplug Adam and Julia, but there’s nothing he can do to bring them back. It looks like they are stuck in this void.

Adam and Julia look around them innocently, not knowing that they are stuck in a simulation, but they’ll find out soon enough.

Plot: Charles Foy (Adrian Rawlins) wrestles with the thought of telling his employees that they are stuck in a meaningless void, but he decides that, for the benefit of his research, they shouldn’t know until research is completed and Charles got what he deserved. He thinks it’s highly unethical, but besides, he might find a way to get them out before they even notice. It’s going to be one hell of a challenge, but he never stepped away from one and today is not the day he’ll give up in front of adversity. He gives them a car inside the simulation with a GPS with coordinates on it. He tries to contact them, but he can’t seem to be able to talk to the scientists, he’ll have to improvise to reach out to them.

Adam (Bryan Batt) and Julia (Michelle Fairley) force the two androids, James (Justin Theroux) and Eva (Letitia Wright) to get down the tallest building in the city. When they reach the first floor, they see flashing signs directing them to the nearest car. They get in it and the GPS turns on. Julia tries to contact Charles, but she gets no response. James and Eva sit in the back in silence, as Julia and Adam do. Adam whispers to Julia that she should have a conversation with them, because this is what they’re here for. She asks them what was their favorite part of the day so far and James says he liked to explore the city a lot and Eva thinks about it, looks at James and says the exact same thing. Julia reminds her that she can have her own answer, after all, she has free will and  Eva changes her answer and she says she liked it at the top of the building because it felt like she was on top of the world and it felt good, she felt liberated. Adam notes that it was insightful and he’s beginning to wonder where this GPS is taking them when he takes a road that leads out of town.

While they are out of town, Charles is hard at work to replace the concrete jungle he created for a smaller town to try and ease the load on the system with the hopes that it will bring everything back to normal. He believes he has the right to hope even if his interior voice is telling him otherwise. He replaces the city with a small rural American town. He puts the emphasis on two particular houses, one for James and Adam, the other for Julia and Eva.

They have reached their destination and they find themselves in near a river with a rich forest in the background. They find a drape on the ground and a basket with food and wine in it. They wonder what this is about, and Julia tries to contact Charles again, but to no avail. She shares her concerns with Adam who doesn’t think it’s that bad, he’s probably in the bathroom, or something. They both realise they aren’t hungry and they just stop and lay down to take a moment to look at the landscape. They realise that are lucky to be a part of their experiment and they realise how far technology has come. Their calmness is put to the test when they realise they lost sight of James and Eva. They call them but they are nowhere in sight. They separate to cover more ground and begin to look for them in the forest.

Adam realises that even if all he sees technically isn’t real, the simulation does a great job to make it seem real. He can feel the sun hitting on him and he sees the biodiversity of a real forest. He wanders around the forest and stumbles on Julia, who hasn’t seen the androids either. They lean on trees to take a breather and they stop talking all of sudden, Julia heard something. They follow the sound and find James and Eva in the river, swimming. Eva begs them to come, smiling from ear to ear. Adam and Julia both say that they might as well have fun and join them in the river. Eva particularly enjoys it and she loves how the fishes tickle her feet. James does his best to protect Eva and he follows her everywhere she goes. The camera zooms out as we hear them laugh and having fun.

Charles thinks to himself that it’s still going well regardless. His plan didn’t work and despite getting rid of the giant city, communication isn’t back and he checked and double-checked, there’s no way to bring them back. He swears to himself that he won’t leave the laboratory until he finds a solution, but only after he does this one thing. He grabs his coat and exits the laboratory.

They are all out of the river, eating on the shore. Adam and Julia share life anecdotes that make both James and Eva laugh at how silly humans can be. Julia defends herself by saying that androids can be silly sometimes and Eva agrees. Adam asks them if they had they liked their day today and Eva says that although the water was cold, it was the best day of her life and James agrees. Adam says the best for them is yet to come, after all, they’ve been alive for only one day. They all share a laugh and get back in the car. Eva can’t wait to get back on top of that building again.

Charles is back in the laboratory with a covered cage. He takes the sheet off to reveal a parrot. He greets his partner for the next couple of days and the parrot greets him back. Charles wonders what he got himself into and he notices they are leaving the river, so he watches them carefully.

As they get back to the city, they can’t help but notice that something has changed. Julia has a bad feeling, but Adam says it’s all probably part of the plan. Eva is sad that the tall buildings are gone and James reassures her in the backseat. They drive all the way to a cozy neighborhood. Adam pulls over in his parking spot and enters his house with James. Julia and Eva enter their house and Julia can’t help but notice a note on the table. She reads the note and Charles prays that she doesn’t panic. Julia drops the note of the floor, things aren’t looking good for Charles.

Stefanie Scott .... Mary

Plot : Julia (Michelle Fairley) picks up the note she just dropped on the floor. She just found out they are stuck in a simulation and her boss doesn’t know how to get them out. She wonders if he gave her colleague a similar note, so he leaves the house to see Adam (Bryan Batt). Eva (Letitia Wright) follows her. She claims she wants to see James (Justin Theroux). Julia allows her to come and they enter Adam’s house. James is sitting on the couch, starring at the wall and Adam is walking around the house. He’s happy to see Julia, but from the look on her face, he doesn’t think this discussion will go well. She closes the door and he points out that he doesn’t think it’s your classic social call. She asks him if he had a note in the house and he says he didn’t see one. She shows him the letter and Adam sits on his bed in disbelief.

Charles (Adrian Rawlins) is in panic mode. He thought Julia was going to be professional enough to keep it to herself and wait until the job is completed, but instead, she did the rational thing and told Adam. His parrot tells him he’s an idiot and he begs him to shut, only for the parrot to repeat after him. He looks down on them and wonders how he’s going to get them out of there.

Julia and Adam are sitting on the couch and starring at the wall, just like James did moments ago. James and Eva and spending time together in the backyard, James pushing Eva in a swing. Adam breaks the silence and looks at them, innocently playing. He says they have no idea what’s happening. Julia says it was a crazy plan to begin with and she regrets being a part of it. Adam is more optimistic, saying Charles will find a way to get them out of here. James and Eva come back inside and notice they are sad. They analyse them and get sad themselves. They wonder what life is all about, and Adam is happy with the progress, pointing out that they perceived another emotion. Julia sarcastically says it’s great and she takes Eva by the hand and tries to go back to her house.

Charles had a plan and he decided to experiment with the simulation even further. He takes control of two random citizens and make them move in the house next to Julia’s.

Julia is blocked by their two new neighbors, Jacob (Theodore Pellerin) and Mary (Stefanie Scott). Jacob is holding balloons and Stefanie cooked a pie. They say they are here to party! Adam welcomes them in and serves pie to Eva and James, but Julia is indifferent. Adam tells her to keep it cool, this is all part of a plan and they are doing this for a reason. She says they may be doing this for a reason, but it doesn’t do anything to the fact that they are stuck in a simulation. Adam says it’s time for her to accept it and wait. Nothing can happen to them here. She says he’s right and she includes herself in the party. They laugh together, but suddenly, Jacob and Mary catch fire. Adam rushes to take out the fire and Eva is devastated by Mary’s death and James is devastated by Jacob’s. Eva points out Mary breaded her hair and James enjoyed playing catch with Jacob. Adam and Julia say they could try to do the same and they leave each other, for now.

Julia is breading Eva’s hair in her room and talk about how they feel. Eva places her hand on Julia’s lap and points out that she can feel her sadness and it makes her feel sad too. Eva says she misses Mary a lot and James even more. Julia isn’t as good as Mary to bread her hair. Julia says she’s sorry and she starts to cry on Eva’s lap, who console her. Adam is throwing James a football, until James decides they should chase each other with it, essentially play football. Adam, who played football in high school, think it could be good to remind himself of his good days. He takes the football and starts to run, but James is too quick for him and he absolutely obliterates him. Adam lays on the ground hurt, and James says he’s sorry. He misses Jacob, whom he could tackle as hard as he could. He also misses Eva too and he wonders if Adam misses Julia. Adam says Julia isn’t his Eva, but he wishes she were. Adam starts to cry from the pain and sadness and James says he can feel his sadness and tries to console him.

Charles is happy that progress is being made. He wonders why the two new androids explode and he says he will try to experiment again. He begins to wonder if he’s too mean with Adam and Julia, but he says he’ll work on a solution as soon as the androids will be able to learn feelings on their own and don’t need monitoring all day long. It will all start when Adam and Julia will stop be so desperate and do their job.

Plot: The night has come and everyone is back in their respective house. Julia (Michelle Fairley) and Adam (Bryan Batt) can’t sleep and neither can James (Justin Theroux) and Eva (Letitia Wright), but not for the same reasons. The humans are desperately thinking about their upcoming fate and how their life is all ruined and rendered meaningless by a stupid decision. The androids, quite simply, miss each other and can’t even think about being away from each other. James decides to leave the house. He doesn’t make a sound and he’s out without Adam realising that he left. He goes over to Eva’s house and climbs to her window. He tells her how much he missed and her and they share a kiss. The noise in the room forces Julia to leave her bed and enter the room. She catches them kissing and she says that this is bad and James shouldn’t be here. James says he couldn’t be away from her. He didn’t want to be kept away from Eva. He doesn’t want to end up like Adam and how he feels about Julia. Julia understood what Adam meant and she kicks him out of the house before going back to bed, thinking about what James just said.

Charles (Adrian Rawlins) is sleeping, when he suddenly wakes up. He has an idea to keep them happy and prevent another depressive episode like yesterday. His parrot keeps telling him that will not work, but he stopped listening to the bird. He upgrades their respective houses and he even creates an identical dog for Julia, so she doesn’t miss it. The are now living in a small paradise and they surely won’t complain. He recreates two identical androids to the ones who caught fire and he wants to use them as props to keep his puppets entertained. He’s so determined that it will work that he messes up with the simulation to advance the time so it’s daytime outside. He receives a notification on his phone reminding him that he has a board meeting asking for an update tomorrow and they want tangible proofs that it will work. He certainly hopes that it will work, because he can’t show two depressed androids and melancholic humans.

Julia and Adam are surprised by the fast sunrise and get up. They haven’t slept all night. Julia is hungry. She notices the changes to the house and doesn’t mind it. She starts to make breakfast and their kitchen window has a look on Adam’s kitchen. Adam smiles at Julia who smiles back. They make breakfast and they eat with their respective androids, while talking about the weather. They need to develop that small talk. James wants to head out of town today and Adam thinks it’s a good idea, only to realise that their car is gone. It saddens James and Adam points out that James’ morale isn’t really good. He’s been chasing Julia for years now and only showed his sadness yesterday. Not everything should sadden you. Right now, James is acting like a child and when he’s a grown man. James agrees and toughens up. They get out of the house and meet with Julia and Eva on their front lawn. They discuss about their new houses, when Jacob (Theodore Pelletin) and Mary (Stefanie Scott) arrive.

James and Eva are happy to see their friends back and it’s just like they never left. They start chasing each other, like children playing tag, but Julia prevents them from getting too far away, they can’t afford to lose them. It leaves her alone with Adam, which makes for an awkward moment. Adam asks her if she slept and she says she hasn’t. Their conversation is interrupted by a familiar sound for Julia. Her dog runs in her direction and jumps on her. She’s so happy to see it and she leaves Adam to spend time with her dog. Adam is left alone and sits on the ground, contemplative. He suddenly receives a communication from Charles. A speaker appears in front of him and Charles talks with him. Charles asks him how it’s going, and Adam says it’s not good. Chares says it’s not so bad and they made some significant progress. Adam snaps. He says it may be all good and they may have made progress, but it doesn’t change from the fact that they are stuck in here. He asks Charles if he did anything to get them out of here and Charles says they have made so much progress that he hasn’t given it any thought. Adam can’t believe it. He refuses to work until Charles disconnects them. He throws the speaker away and lays on the gourd. Charles tries to communicate with him through the clouds and Adam runs inside. Charles moves writes on the walls giving him directions and Adam stops moving and he screams. Julia runs back inside with her dog and he tells her what happened.

James and Eva are with Jacob and Mary. Charles made up a restaurant for them to eat in and they are eating at a fancy place. The waitress is Mary and she notes that they are such a cute couple. James reminds her that Julia forbids them to have an intimate relationship and Mary says it’s shame, they are so cute together. They order whatever the chef wants to cook them and share a moment together. They tell each other what they like about the other. James says he likes Eva’s easygoing manner and the way she laughs. Eva likes James’ attention and the way he looks at him. James tells Eva how he feels about her and how he’s sad that they can’t be together. At the same time, Adam reveals his true love to Julia and how he feels about her. With the recent development, he found out that he may have to spend the rest of his life here and he doesn’t want to live unhappy forever after here. He’s not sure they can die here. Charles has lost his mind and he doesn’t think he’ll let them out until they are done. Julia leans forward and kisses him, she feels the same way, why leave her unhappy when you can enjoy every moment of it. They lean back on the bed as James and Eva casually kiss at the restaurant, so shy, like a young teen couple.

Plot : Following a romantic evening, James (Justin Theroux) and Eva (Letitia Wright) come back to their respective house and by hand and by hand. The simulation animates itself around them, creating a corridor of wonder for our two lovebirds. Charles (Adrian Rawlins) looks on from a distance and is satisfied with his work, they learned a new emotion after all. He thinks it’s now time for them to be separated and he forces them to separate thanks to a strong wind. James enters his house and he hears something upstairs. He walks carefully to avoid making any noise. Charles wants to see what’s all the fuss, but his view is obstructed. He shifts in first person view from James’ perspective. James opens Adam’s door and he sees Adam (Bryan Batt) having sex with Julia (Michelle Fairley). Charles turns the camera off. He can’t get the image out of his mind. He thinks it’s time for him to get some sleep and hopefully forget about it, so he settles on his couch as his parrot tells him that he’s a perv.

James is happy to know that it’s what this is for, pointing to his crotch. Adam asks him to get out and so does Julia. Before he leaves, he tells Adam he’s happy that he was finally able to get closer to Julia. He’s more in love than ever with Eva. He says it’s nice for him, but he really needs to get out. James approaches to give him an awkward hug. Julia asks him if that’s what their life is about now and he says that’s probably the case. Julia suddenly wonders if Charles saw them and Adam tells her to calm down. He saw the camera as soon as he moved in and he painted it black, so he can’t see anything. They lay next to each other and fall asleep.

The following morning, Adam looks all around the house to find Adam. Julia joins him in his search and conclude that he’s not in the house. Julia tells Adam she’ll go to her house to change and when she enters her house, Eva comes up to her completely naked. She takes her by the hand and drags her to her room. She also sees James completely naked and Eva asks for advice to replicate what she was doing last night with Adam, because, according to James it looked fun. She says they aren’t supposed to show themselves like that and Adam feels like she wouldn’t have been able to adequately help them if they weren’t completely undressed.

Charles wakes up way later than he would have liked. He’s angry at his parrot for letting him oversleep and the parrot reminds him that this is what alarm clocks do. He’s shocked to see what’s on the screen. They have gone too far in their show of love and it can’t be tolerated, not while they are doing their job. A huge claw appears out of nowhere in Eva’s bedroom and drags her away. Charles drops her in Adam’s house. He gives her clothes and he also forces Adam to dress up. Charles also builds walls and makes a car appear in front of Adam’s house. He forces them to get inside the car and he drives it away. He does the same thing to James and Julia. While they are driving there, he builds two separates buildings on the other side of town, designed to keep them separated for the duration of his board meeting. He designs them they will be fun environments that will showcase everything that is good about his androids. His cellphone reminds him that he should leave now, she he designs the building in a hurry, before leaving his laboratory with a cup of coffee.

James and Julia try to understand what happened and she’s certain that it’s Charles who did something do them, because he saw what happened. James says he liked it better when Eva was around. The same things are said in Adam and Eva’s car. They reach their respective destination at about the same time. They both realise that it’s all too good to be true. Everything is pristine and chic, it seems all wrong. Charles designed the building in such a rush that he made a mistake. The two buildings are connected on a screen and they can see each other. James and Eva immediately try to touch each other and say how they love each other. Julia and Adam both agree that it looks like Charles messing with them again. He has clearly lost his mind.

A woman tells Charles that he’s ready to see him. He follows here and he meets with the only man present; Mason Crowley (Bertie Carvel). Charles lets him know that he expected to meet the board and Mason said they sent him to represent their interests. He asks for a progression update and Charles says they’ve achieved a lot in the past couple of days. He shows him clips of the androids interacting with each other in various situations and Crowley is impressed. He says he’d like to meet the two scientists he keeps seeing in the clips. They’ve had direct contact with the subject, so they would be able to share their experience with James and Eva. Charles says they are unavailable right now, they’re hard at work. Mason knows he can have a live feed of the simulation, so he wants to talk to Adam and Julia. Charles refuses, but Mason insists. Charles has no choice but to comply. He gets the live feed and he prays that they don’t shit the bed for him. The live feed appears, and we see James and Eva kissing on the screen. Mason doesn’t think they’re very smart because they are kissing a screen and not really each other. Mason tries to talk to Julia and Adam, but Charles remembers that the audio is broken and he can’t talk to them. He puts the blame on technical difficulties and he asks Mason what he thinks. He says he clearly saw potential, but he’s not really convinced. He wants something tangible, he’d like to meet the androids, or at the very least the scientists, but they won’t cut his funding if that’s what he’s worried about. If he doesn’t have anything in a week, it may be different though.

Plot : Charles (Adrian Rawlins) rushes back to his office. He made a mistake in his design and he needs to fix it. He wants to separate the androids, they can’t always be with each other. On his way to his laboratory, he imagines a great plan. He wants to take advantage of their isolation to teach them a new emotion. He also wants to get back at Adam (Bryan Batt) and Julia (Michelle Fairley) for letting the androids fall in love with each other. It is the perfect opportunity for them to learn what fear is.
James (Justin Theroux) asks Julia how he could touch Eva (Letitia Wright) through the screen and she says it’s impossible. She paces around the lobby, trying to find something that could help them get out of here. Adam does the same thing, but he’s a little more aggressive. He doesn’t like any of this and, as crazy as it sounds, he just wants to go back to the houses and simply be with Julia. A woman comes up to Julian and asks her to follow her to the elevator. Obviously, Julia doesn’t want to do that, but her grip is too tight. They stop on the second floor and she pushes Julia in a room and closes the door. A woman does the same to Adam, James and Eva, but they all stop at different floors. Charles designed the buildings so each floor has a different fear stimulus.
Julia opens her eyes, she can’t see anything in the pitch black room. A woman opens a lightbulb. Her name is Anna (Rhea Perlman). Julia wants to know where she is, but Anna isn’t programmed to answer that question. Anna talks down Julia and insults her, saying she’ll never find success in life. Julia Connor will never succeed and she’s a bitch. Julia now recognizes it. Anna is her childhood bully, but in its adult form. She tries to get out her the room, but the door is locked. Julia hides into a corner. She doesn’t want to see Anna again.
Adam is left alone in a dark room. He paces around, trying to find something, but he rapidly comes to the conclusion that there’s nothing in there, except a small fire burning in the center of the room with a chair. He sits on the chair and a screen appears in front of him. He sees Julia, but she can’t see him. She tries to get away from Anna, but she grabs Julia by the ponytail and pushes her through the ground. Adam tries to do something to help Julia, but there’s nothing he can do. He chooses to look away when Anna starts throwing rocks on Julia. She reminds her that she used to do that during recess.
Eva is tied up to a chair and she calls for James, not knowing that he will never come. She asks if anyone’s here and a hole opens on the floor. A box comes up and it opens. A snake comes out of it. The snake crawls on Eva’s legs and she tries to shake it off, but she’s restrained. The snake crawls all the up to her head and he twirls around her neck. A spider crawls out of the box and rests on her foot. Eva screams, she’s terrified and bugs and snakes.
James didn’t go up, he went to the basement. He asks a faceless robot where’s Eva and Charles, talking through the robot tells James to look to his left. James sees Eva on a screen struggling with the snakes and spiders. James runs towards the screen, but the floor splits open. There’s fire below and James is terrified, he doesn’t like fire. The robot tells him that he needs to get to the other side of the room to see and help her. James progresses carefully. He reaches the screen and tries to touch it, but it is sent back further in the room. The floor cracks open again and it looks like it will be more difficult.
Adam sits near the fire silently. He looks into it, as if he was trying to find answers to questions he doesn’t know the answers too. Julia is tired of being bullied and she stands up to Anna, who initially laughs at her attempt to stand up for herself, takes a step back when she sees that Julia is done being bullied. Julia says that she shouldn’t hold on to the past and she’s different and better person now. Anna isn’t programmed to do anything else than bully her. From the comfort of his laboratory, Charles presses a button to stop the experiment on Julia and Adam. Their doors unlock and they can leave.

All sorts of small creatures are climbing on Eva. The snake continues to apply pressure on her neck. She keeps calling James’ name. On his end, James is struggling with the obstacle course. Charles watches him carefully. He checks on their vital signs and he can see they know feel fear. James tries to jump on a platform, but he slips. He legs catches on fire and Charles stops everything. He puts out the fire on James’ leg with a perfectly placed dysfunctional extinguisher. He also lets Eva go. They deserve it. They now know what fear is.

Everyone reunites on Julia’s front lawn. She grabs her dog and follows Adam home. They can let the androids live together. Julia asks Adam what was his fear today and he says that he realises it now, he’s afraid to die alone, but as long as he has her, he’s going to be alright. James and Ava passionately kiss and move in together. Eva asks him what happened to his leg and he says  he did this trying to help her. She thanks him for his kindness and she says she doesn’t deserve him, he’s too good. Everything is back to normal after a scary incident.

Plot : Charles (Adrian Rawlins) decided to take a break from experimenting and try to find a way for his colleagues to come out of the simulation. He documented his efforts, but he hasn’t been able to do anything about it. His morale is at an all-time low. He keeps observing his androids and he’s forced to realise that they are literally addicted to each other. They can’t seem to be able to spend half an hour without falling in each other’s arms. He’s been able to keep Julia (Michelle Fairley) and Adam (Bryan Batt) distracted from their fake life my giving them things they enjoy and don’t necessarily have the time to enjoy in the real world. Charles is interrupted in his work by someone knocking on the front door. He opens it, only to find a man (Dave Franco), named Will, who says he’s here for the clinical trial ad he saw in the newspaper.

Charles completely forgot about the ad he posted to recruit people who were willing to participate in his study. He asks Will questions and he asks what motivates him to be a part of this experiment. Will says he’ll be honest with Charles, because he seems like a good man. He’s a drug addict and the drugs are becoming more and more expensive. The payment Charles offers his more than enough to cover for a substantial amount of dope. Charles asks him to repeat what he just said, and Will confirms that he’s a drug addict. Charles says he’s perfect for the role. He makes him sign a form that states he could very well not come be able to come back to the real world, but Will doesn’t take the time to read it. His recent work allowed Charles to learn that he could still send people in there, but he still has no clue how to get them how. They end their discussion and discuss the specifics while Charles plugs Will into the machine.

Adam is reading a book when he receives his first instructions from Charles. He gives him and Julia the option to drive far away to someplace pleasant. They try to convince themselves that Charles isn’t up to anything, he’s been too gentle for the past few days. They both agree that there’s something shady about it, but they give him the benefit of the doubt. They could always get out of there if they sense something is wrong. They happily leave the together, allowing Charles to do what he wants with James (Justin Theroux) and Eva (Letitia Wright). He interrupts them having sex again and he forces them to go somewhere. They hold on to each other, out of fear of what might happen next.

James and Eva are in a shady part of town and Charles guides them inside an apartment building. Will opens the door and invites them in his apartment. He offers James drugs, but he declines, not knowing what it is. Will vents the merits of drugs and the wonders it does for, how you feel when you take them and everything. Eva asks James to go, she’s scared of all the filthy looking men and women laying on the ground, passed out in their own vomit. James is still uncertain about the drugs and Charles, watching from above, is getting impatient. He forces James to take the drug and from watching his charts and data on the monitors, he can tell he likes it. James suggests to Eva to give it a try, perhaps it will be good for her and help with her anxiety. She’s a good sport and takes a dose too.

Adam and Julia follow their GPS religiously, but they’re forced to realise that they are just driving around the city without a clear destination. They think it’s because Charles wanted them to be away from their home. They knew it was too good to be true. Adam rushes back home, even if Charles tries to create traffic. They realise the androids aren’t home. They sit in the car silently, they’ve had enough. They say it’s time for them to go home. He doesn’t want them to leave and he’s surely not making any efforts to get them out of here, so they’ll find a way themselves. They leave their front lawn, trying to find the center of their universe.

James and Eva come back to reality. Will is crouched in a corner of the apartment, surrounded by passed out corpses. He’s shivering from head to toe with sweat dripping down his forehead. He’s spooked when James and Eva start moving, he’s so on edge. He asked them if they liked that and they both say that it was a peculiar experiment. He asks them if they want some more and James say they’re good. Will thinks it’s weird because he feels so good when he’s high that as soon as the feeling is over, he wants to be high again. Eva says she doesn’t feel that urge at all. Will says that it’s time for the second round then and he takes a syringe and he proceeds to inject drugs in himself. Two robots come in and inject the same thing in James and Eva, before taking them to separate rooms. Will only has the time to follow Eva before passing out on the floor.

Julia and Adam stopped in front of a building, downtown, they suspect to be at the very center of the city. Nobody goes in or out, which is the main reason why they think it is suspicious because the remember from their first visit that he really took the time to create a fully functional city. They lock their car and decide to explore the building, but the front door is locked, furthering their suspicions. In his laboratory, Charles struggles to find them in the city. All the traffic he created and the back and forth between them and the androids made it impossible for him to keep track. Adam gets Julia’s attention. He broke a window and found his way in.

Eva wakes up to find Will, who’s even more in distress. Before she asks him if he’s alright, she immediately begins looking for James. Will says he’s not here, but he notes that like him with his drugs, Eva seems addicted to him. They feel the same when they are separated than when he’s not on drugs. Eva realises that he’s right and Will warns her that if something ever happens to James, she could end up like him, miserable and frail and vice versa. Eva realises he’s right and she goes to find James and they leave the building, perplexed by recent revelations.

 Human - Synthesis
Genre: Sci-Fi / Drama
Executive Producer: Michelle MacLaren
Writer: Ann Morrow

Cast:
Justin Theroux .... James
Letitia Wright .... Eva
Bryan Batt .... Adam Clark
Michelle Fairley .... Julia Connor
Adrian Rawlins .... Charles Foy

Plot: Adam (Bryan Batt) and Julia (Michelle Fairley) sneaked inside the building located at the center of the simulation. Charles (Adrian Rawlins), is trying to find them in the city, not knowing they are inside a building. It is pitch dark in there, the windows are covered with black sheets. Adam takes one down to at least see something, but an alarm starts ringing. Julia is able to disable it quickly, Charles didn’t have the time to see it pop up on one of his screens. Adam and Julia go separate ways with the hopes of finding something quicker than they would if they would stick together. Adam goes down the stairs and Julia goes up. They both go through a heavy door that closes itself right after they passed it. The red lights are dimmed, making for a unpleasant ambiance.

James (Justin Theroux) and Eva (Letitia Wright) are back at home and looking all over the place for Adam and Julia. They come to the conclusion that they aren’t here and instead of trying to find them, Eva sets her sight on a gigantic tree in their backyard, a tree she has never seen before. Charles planted that tree mere moments ago to get her attention. He got embroiled in the traffic situation and he can’t risk to lose them too. Eva suggests they should go see the tree from up close, it really looks gigantic.

Julia is still going up the building with no end in sight. She feels like she hasn’t made the right choice, because nothing she sees resembles whatever they’re looking for. Some floors are filled with books. She tried to open one to see what it is about and there’s nothing written inside it. She keeps trying though, as if she would fine the answer to get out of here. She’s mainly doing it out of frustration now and she realises that this exercise is pointless. She enters a stairwell and looks up, her ascent is far from over.

Adam doesn’t have to climb up the stairs, because the lower-level spans kilometers by kilometers. It’s spreading under the city, which makes Adam realise that he might be at the right, he just needs to find the thing he’s looking for, but the problem is, he doesn’t know what it is. He walks around until he sees a cart. He drives it to move around faster. He drives around the perimeter and he uses his uncanny ability to locate himself to predict where the center is. He reaches the center and metal doors stand in his way. He gets off the cart and a camera analyses him. It sends an alert to Charles who realises they are closing in on the center of his universe. He presses the emergency button, basically locking Adam and Julia in the building.

Eva and James lay in the grass, hand-by-hand, in front of the tree. Following what happened earlier today, Eva asks James if he thinks they are bad for each other. She uses Will’s words and she claims they are addicted to each other. James agrees that they spend all of their time together and he doesn’t like it when she isn’t around. They have learned so much in the last couple of days, he can now use words to describe what he feels because he understands his feelings. He can say that he’s madly in love with her and he would be sad if she wasn’t around. Every day, he fears that she might be gone when he wakes up. When he’s with her, he feels like he’s the happiest man in the world, so yeah, he may addicted to her. Eva says she feels the same, but she has this voice inside her head that says she should keep her distance. James doesn’t understand what voice she’s talking about and she tries to describe it to him, but fails.

Adam tries to call for Julia, but she doesn’t hear him. She got all the way to the top of the building without finding anything of note. From up there, she wonders what Adam is up to, before deciding to go all the way down to the basement. She hasn’t heard from him, so she’s not too optimistic. Charles managed to isolate Adam in the basement. He tries to keep him away from the engine room, but when he tries to spawn something else, he receives a warning that there’s too much stuff in the simulation. Charles swears that he shouldn’t have implemented this feature after the accident and he tries to remove as much stuff as possible without affecting anything, to no avail. He has lost control of his simulation. Adam breaks into the engine room and finds himself in front of the power supply. The voices in his head debate and his heart races. Should he destroy the engines? Will he die? What would Julia do? Will he see her again? He wishes she was here with him at this moment to make a decision, she’s the voice of reason of their science team. Adam takes a deep breath and grabs whatever is within reach. He holds his breath and swings at the engines, destroying them. The screen goes black.

Michelle Fairley .... Julia Connor
Adrian Rawlins .... Charles Foy

Plot : Charles (Adrian Rawlins) regains consciousness. His laboratory is on fire as a result of the simulation breaking down. He gathers all the important papers and his parrot before running away. He tells his parrot to hold on and he runs back inside to see if his two employees were able to come back to the real world.

Julia (Michelle Fairley) wakes up and grasps for air. Her colleague Adam (Bryan Batt) is standing right next to her. They are still plugged the machine. Her eyes move up and she sees the fire quickly spreading all over the laboratory. She breaks herself free from the now useless machine and tries to wake Adam up. With tears dripping down her face, she hits him the chest repeatedly until he wakes up and grasps for air. She breaks himself free and they try to escape the laboratory, but they are forced to drop to the ground due to the intense smoke level in the building. They see a light coming in their direction. Charles spotted them. He helps them to get out of the building and into the street. Charles runs back inside, he wants to save his androids.

James (Justin Theroux) is in his pod, in a senseless and pitch-black void. The only source of light comes out of his pod. He exits the pod and walks around, until he can’t breath anymore. He drops to the ground and faints. Eva is in her pod, in a similar void, but she can’t see James anymore. She wonders where she is and exits her pod. It is now her turn to grasp for air. She has the time to go back in her pod and she presses on a series of button uncontrollably and in a random order. The passes out as she hears noises coming from her pod.

We are transported inside James’ head. He remembers the good moments he shared with Eva during the last few days. He sheds a tear when he realises that this is all over. He thinks he’s back in the simulation, but this is all a dream. He’s sitting in the grass near the river, where he fell in love with Eva. He runs around, but he can’t see her. He jumps in the river with the hopes of finding her. He hears distant voices, Adam and Julia, but he can’t see them anywhere. He stops dead in his tracks to realise all of this is gone and he’s now all alone in this world. He suddenly hears Eva. He swims around, trying to find her. The voice is closer and closer. He can see her in his mind, it’s like she’s whispering in his ear, only she isn’t here. It could all be in his head, but he can really feel it. The voice gets louder and louder until James’ eyes close by themselves.

Charles runs back in the laboratory at the same time the firefighters are here. They force him to get out of the dangerous situation and they tell him they’ll take care of it and save as much as possible. Charles reminds to save, above all else, his androids. He gets back outside and tells to Adam and Julia that he’s happy they were able to get out. They both look at each other and decide to scream at Charles for keeping them prisoner in there and how he handled the whole thing. He punished them and controlled their life from a to z and not only is that highly unethical, but that’s straight up insane. He tries to defend himself by saying that what they were doing was really important for the future of humanity and they had to make sure they would succeed, but they both say this was unacceptable and they would have found another way. Charles tells them about the investors pressure and the results they wanted, but again, they don’t think his behavior was acceptable. Adam and Julia want out of Charles’ project and he tries to keep them on board, to no avail, Charles begins to frantically search for his parrot for some comfort, but Julia tells him he flew away when he went back inside. She understands the parrot, Charles Foy is crazy. Julia and Adam head back home, they promise they’ll see each other again and will talk about this. Charles is visited by Mason Crowley (Bertie Carvel) who stopped by to tell him that his funding has been taken away. He’ll want to know what happened. They’ll get to the bottom of this. He leaves as suddenly as he arrived. The firefighters come out of the building. Charles desperately ask them if they were able to save his two robots, but all of them say that they haven’t seen any robots inside the laboratory.
Adam is back home and he goes through his mountain of mail. He can’t help but think about Julia. It feels weird not having her around, she completes him, in a way. He throws his mail in the trash and packs his belongings in a suitcase. He locks the door behind him and takes the subway.

Julia is also back home. She expects her dog to welcome her when she gets home, but instead, she finds his cadaver on the ground. She forgot that she went away for so long. She starts to cry on the floor next to him and swears that Charles is going to pay for this. Adam arrives at her place. He sneaks behind her and hugs her as they cry together.

Moments earlier, Eva was able to wake James up and together, they ran away from the fire. The firefighters missed them by a hair. James grabs Eva’s hand and they ran away together. Right now, they are standing in the middle of the streets, wondering where they are. The two androids are on the loose.
